Canada has certain words for different things too.
Stocking cap = Toque or Ski-doo cap (the one with eyelets that cover your face)
Chesterfield = Sofa
Snowmobile = Ski-doo

Cup cakes in Britain are type of fairy cake.
A light sponge cake with a thick fondant icing topping and they are in a foil case. The most popular make is Lyons and the fondant icing is in orange, lemon and chocolate flavour though I believe they also do a special edition toffee flavour.

They have those in France as well. Often the toilets are separate but the facilites for washing your hands are joint.

A friend of mine's daughter was a University a few years ago and their bath and toilet facilities were mixed and girls and lads were also on the same floor. They used to put the lads at the ends of each corridor theory being if someone got in that should not the fellow could deal with it and protect the girls.
My friend actually felt more at ease that the dorms were mixed and felt his daughter was safer.

I would use the term 5 years ago more though 5 years on is used more I would say in TV documentary or news program.
You can also use the term to mean 5 years in advance if you word the sentance slightly different LOL.

I have heard some British journalists use the "5 years ago" alot, so I guess it's all a matter of context like you say. :)

We took our kids to Montana for a week in 2003, and did day trips down to Yellowstone. One day, we went beyond Yellowstone down to the Great Tetons. We didn't get as far as Jackson Hole, but the whole area in the Tetons was just breathtaking! I can understand why the Cheney's love it so much.

Britain
Stocking cap=ski mask
Sofa=settee or sofa - I think Chesterfield is type of sofa as I have also heard that term but I think in Britain it would relate to a style and possibly also a brand but more likely a style.
A new one I have learned this easter
egg holders = egg cups

One of my brother in law's nieces made an egg cup for me as a Christmas gift in her school art class. It's really neat, and I can eat a hard boiled or soft boiled egg with it. :)

Sometimes I go to bed at 4:00 in the morning, especially in the winter. LOL
During the summer months though, it begins to become daylight about that time. LOL
