What Would FReepers Do? A Question to the Forum.
RFace's Life ^ | 3.17.2007 | RFace

Posted on 03/17/2007 1:44:41 PM PDT by rface

I now know what I am going to do – But I am curious as to what other FReepers might do when faced with this situation.

What will I do?? (I know what I am going to do.)

I have a cousin whom I love, and with whom I am close. I grew up with this guy. We are both in our middle 40s. We both have gone through our teen-age years with some trouble along the way – and we both now hold good jobs. We both have done pretty well – in spite of our earlier attempts at self-destruction…..and in spite of some heavy burdens that life has thrown our way.

I was married a few months ago (my 2nd…and my last) and I invited my cousin and his “significant other” to our wedding. They flew in from Boston and my wife and I were very happy to have them here to be at our wedding.

I am very close to my cousin. I also like, and get along with, his “significant other”. My Cousin and I don’t see eye-to-eye on some things, but he did vote for Bush in 2000. And we agree on a lot of taxation and financial conservative views. He’s pretty much conservative-ish….sort of…(not that his politics has anything to do with this issue) ….except that he’s gay and he sent me a wedding invitation for me and my wife to come to the wedding in Massachusetts.

My Cousin knows where I stand on the Gay Marriage issue…. And my wife shares my view. Our views are not secretly held. We both think a Marriage is between a man and woman – but we both also think “civil unions” may be an option that Gay couples should be able to utilize.

The Question: Would you go to a family members Gay Wedding under a situation like this??

Jesus hung out with prostitutes and thieves. He wasn't really all that picky.

This is actually a lie that is oftentimes repeated by the religious left. The fact is that Jesus hung out with former prostitutes and theives.

You don't really know if they never committed those sins again. After all, how were they supporting themselves?

1. Read the bible. 2. They were hanging around with a guy who fed 5,000 people with two fish. I'm guessing that they had access to the best career counselor around, and if nothing else they ended up as passable carpenters.

I would not attend. Loving someone doesn't mean loving or approving of everything that person says, does or believes. If I were in that situation, I might send some kind of gift (uplifting?) with a note wishing for his happiness. I would wish him true happiness, which would include the knowledge that no one has to be "gay". I'm not saying I would include that in the message, but it would be in my heart.

To me, the courage to stand up for one's convictions is what makes or breaks the convictions. Attending such a sham wedding is standing up in support of normalizing homosexuality.

In your post #238, you said,

"Marriage is about children, Gay lifestyle is about Sex"

Thousands, perhaps millions of marriages take place, which are not about children...people past the age of bearing children, get married...many of child bearing age, cannot have children for any variety of reasons, yet they get married...many people of child bearing age who can have children, chose not to have children...

Taking your line to its conclusion, the only people who should be getting married, are those who are of child bearing age, who will make the choice to bear those children...is that really what you are trying to say?...if so, I find that ridiculous...

Ah, a voice of truth and sanity. You are exactly right. Lots of heterosexual couples get married and produce no children, for reasons you stated. Of course, there are those who heap all kinds of vitriol on childless couples, but I think they're busybodies.

I would probably have "lots of meetings and a dentist appointment scheduled for that day". I wouldn't have much of a problem with being there until they got to that "you may kiss the bride(or whatever they call it)" part of the ceremony.

In a heartbeat. 30 years from now you will be glad you did. My very best friend from childhood is gay. One of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Smart too. He came out of the closet when we were both in grad school (was an interesting letter to receive though when he did - we were in different schools at the time and he was very worried about telling me). He completed his PhD in math and went on to a very successful career working with the DOD at the TS level. They certainly did not have a problem with it.

We are friends to this day. He has a happy life (more than a lot of folks in this world) and I am glad he does.

You and your wife should show up in the most flamboyant drag or S&M outfit you could possibly come up with. Interesting to see who would accuse you of disrespecting the tradition of the ceremony.

He, not you, will stand before the Great White Throne on judgment day for this action.

This I do not buy into. If there is a throne, then we all have sinned. And the Bible specifically states ALL SIN is the same.

Thanks for your kind remarks...

I would agree with you, that those who heap vitriol on childless couples, are nothing but busybodies...

I also find the idea that sex is 'only' for creating children to be equally ridiculous...Certainly, having children is a wonderful result of having sex, but I do believe, that God meant for us to enjoy sex within a marriage, even tho it may produce no children...sex is a way, for the man and woman who are married, to share themselves with one another in the most intimate and wonderful and meaningful way...

In my opinion, if one really believes that sex is nothing but a means to having children, I feel sorry for that person...yet I know that there are those, who believe in exactly that way...too bad, in my opinion...

Yikes! Let me put it this way. If you go, imagine the company you'll be in. How does that make you feel? I don't think I could put myself in that position. Let me explain:

I am probably the only Freeper who has ever been to a gay leather bar in San Fran. Not on purpose mind you. Was meeting a friend for drinks and he suggested a bar. So I went. Kinda shocked me at first, but you know, once they found out I was not going to shout or run away, they turned out to be a bunch of nice folk.

Not one ever got in my face, tried to get suggestive or even overtly pushed their lifestyle. It was just billiards and drinks. Not a place I went back to, but in all honesty, I was not, nor am I upset I ended up there and I don't have a gay bone in my body.

You said, "And the Bible specifically states ALL SIN is the same."...

Indeed, sin is sin..no room for any sin before God, no matter how big or how small...some folks seem to forget that, or consider that their very own sins are not so big...

Its kind of like, being a 'little bit pregnant'...no one can be a 'little bit pregnant'...one either is or is not pregant, there is no inbetween..

Same with being a sinner...one cannot be a 'little bit of a sinner'...one is or is not a sinner...and according to the Bible, 'ALL' are sinners...

Marriage should be about children.. and staying married.. There are classes of corporations marriage should be the same.. because it is.. its a corporation..

I've been to a biker bar. But I don't think it was a gay biker bar. It was in Boise, Idaho, and my car had broken down, I needed to find a phone, and there wasn't anyplace else in sight that looked like there was a pay phone around. This was a very long time ago, long before I'd gotten a cell phone. It was disappointingly a non-issue to be in a biker bar. :D

I have met some weird gay people .... and my cousin and his partner are quick to laugh at them....just as I do. I think that the real weird-os that you see at the homo-parades are looked down on by a large portion of the gays.....

anyways....I only am going into this because of my cousin, as I have stated.

I wouldn't go as I'd see my presence as condoning (at least tacitly) an abomination before God.

There are many things I find as abominable. This is not one of them. Child abuse, murder, torture, oppression, etc; those I do find abominable. Love (even between gay and lesbian couples) I do not.
