Fred Thompson considers running
Townhall.com ^ | March 13, 2007 | William Rusher

The battle for the Republican presidential nomination underwent a major transformation last weekend when Fred Thompson told Chris Wallace of the Fox News Channel that he is considering entering the race. This is no minor development. Bob Beckel, Clinton's longtime press secretary and now a Democratic commentator for Fox, promptly asserted that Thompson is the only possible Republican contender "who scares me," and he is right to worry.

-snip-

It is a major development because Thompson has so many undeniable qualifications for the nomination. First and foremost, he is a true-blue conservative, comfortable with all the positions on social issues (abortion, gay rights, gun control, etc.) that give Rudy Giuliani so much difficulty and that have inspired John McCain and Mitt Romney to "flip-flop" in recent years to curry favor with social conservatives. In the second place, he is (as his television career demonstrates) an immensely attractive personality at 64, with a rumpled and thoughtful charm. Thirdly, his service for eight years in the U.S. Senate (four times Barack Obama's current tenure) attests to his success as a political leader. And finally, he hails from a border state -- Tennessee -- with all that implies for electability in the South and elsewhere.

-snip-

The millions of conservative voters who constitute the Republican Party's base, and whose support is going to be indispensable to any nominee who hopes to win the election, have had visible difficulty generating great enthusiasm for any of the other candidates. Giuliani is an outspoken liberal on a good many important issues. McCain is a bad-tempered maverick who has been all over the map...

-snip-

And by the way, if his critics try to dismiss him as just (or mostly) "an actor," don't forget what happened the last time they tried that.

The Gipper came along at a time in history when we needed him the most.

It would be very nice if Fred followed in the Gippers footsteps.

Beckel is a shmuck who says what he needs to say to get noticed, but why would he lie about this?

It would be great to see Thompson save the country from the Democrats AND Bush 42.

I like Thompson, his ability to communicate will obviously be superior to our current POTUS, it won't be very difficult for him to be more conservative that the current POTUS, and he's far more centered and minus political baggage than just about everyone else on either side of the political spectrum. Still, I'm supporting Duncan Hunter because while he does have to answer to some of his votes while serving in the House, he's still a rock solid conservative and a better than any choice available of all the liberal, moderate, of alleged conservative candidates that have already declared their offical interest in the top job.

Fred Thompson is a very good friend of McCain's and only one of four Senators that endorsed McCain in 2000. If he gets in the race, it will be to help McCain. He supported McCain wholeheartedly on CFR as well. He has exactly zero executive experience and his hearings on the theft of nuclear secrets were basically a sham. Wait until my Senator tears into him and you will see the real Fred Thompson -- he did it once and you can bet he will do it again just like in the primaries in 2000! Did I mention that Thompson voted no on one impeachment count against Clinton?

Some of you just don't get it and don't think why would a friend of McCain's get in the race with McCain. Amazing at the short memories of some of you who were so mad because he voted no against removal on one of the counts.

Please run, Fred! We need a genuinely conservative candidate like you who is likely to win the general election.

I can hear Roy Orbison singing now: "Just run-ing scared..." LOL! You're supporting the most liberal Republican in the race, yet you try to cast guilt by association on Fred Thompson. Get a grip!

I take it, since you support Rudy Fruity that you're a Democrat and a liberal?

He was in the Seante 8 years...What did he do there? I can't recall much at all and some rather negative situations like the investigation of the campaign finances. He just doesn't have the background to impress some of us. I'm looking for leadership, not the image of it he projects due to his career in television and movies. What did he accompish in the Senate that impresses some so much, please detail it for those of us who don't seem to recall much of anything. He did go down to Florida during the re-count, that was a positive. I'm not even sure about his stance on abortion....he seems to have had a few of them, like Romney. It takes more than a great voice and communications skills to make a President. Please (and I am sincerely asking) those of you who support him...Tell us WHY.
