It was a bloodbath at the U.S. box office this weekend because of 2007's first bonafide blockbuster. Warner Bros. told me this morning its 'R'-rated 300 about the epic Battle of Thermopylae shattered the record for the biggest March opening ever, and scored the 3rd biggest 'R'-rated movie debut ever, with its $70+ million. (Or, $70.025 mil to be exact, though the studio didn't provide a breakdown.)
Other studios say this 'Gladiator Gore-Fest' raked in $27.7 mil to $28 mil Friday and $24.3 mil to $24.8 mil Saturday and an estimated $16 mil to $17.2 mil Sunday from its 3,103 theaters.

And Jew-hating Iranian President Ahmagonnahaveajihad is ticked off over it! :-) Yes!
I originally had no plans to see this movie, but I might go just for the fun of it now!
Aided and abeted by lots of publicity from Drudge.
Wish me luck...neither of us like Gore, but she doesn't like gore
The one that got me was the "TWO THUMBS UP", which startled me until you read the fine print: Richard Roeper and a guest critic. I'd be surprised if ebert liked this mess.
I have no plans to see it or buy the inevitable videogame that it's actually a two-hour commercial for.
Fortunate for them since the Spartans were actually decimated at the battle of Thermopylae.
We were in the theater a half hour early, and I witnessed people trickling in. They were ALL twenty-somethings, and there were a LOT of them with all different hair lengths. Mainly guys, but 10-15% girls.
My wife hated the movie, but much to my surprise I liked it a lot. To me it was a thinly-disguised allegory of the current war against the Persians. "Freedom isn't free' was the main theme.
I'm glad it's doing well.
cool.
This movie is PRO war (WOT) and pits pre-Islam nations against the west.
REMEMBER FOLKS:
Leonidas selected those 300 Spartans because they were all FATHERS.
I saw that, but the IMAX theaters near here don't do R rated movies. I guess I'll just have to settle for going to the regular theater.
President Ahmadinejad is deeply saddened...
Movie Kicked much ass
Amawhathisname should only be worried if our "allies" in the larger Western World realize that we are a larger Western World.
That was the general intent of the filmmakers.
I greatly enjoyed it as well, and I think most FReepers would, if they don't mind the blood and gore. While the movie is a bit of a Rorshach test, it's hard not to see the parallel to W of a lone leader and his loyal followers taking a courageous stand against a Middle Eastern tyrant to protect their freedom.
[slight spoiler]
BTW, the oracles or elders or whatever they are--inbred, lecherous and corrupt--seem like stand-ins for the Mainstream Media. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but that was all I could think
we went up to see it on friday, for an early afternoon showing. when we got there there was a big sign that said "IMAX: 300 sold out, all shows friday and saturday."
so we saw "wild hogs" instead.
i wonder how many other movies made extra in sales because 300 had sold out.
Fathers of SONS
"Come back with your shield. Or ON it!"
From the first scene (wherein a voice over is describing the rite of passage for all Spartan males, as an elderly man is standing at the edge of a cliff inspecting a new born to determine if he is worthy of being a Spartan- below him is a pit full of skeletal remains of those that didn't pass inspection) I was certain my wife would hate the movie. But to my surprise, she actually liked it. Citing lines such as "Only Spartan women give birth to real men", "Return with your shield or on it", "This will not be over quickly!", my wife laughed at how the Spartan women in the movie (particularly Queen Gorgo) were just as tough and unrelenting as the men.
Well, I'll give a plug for a broader audience. My wife and I are both on the far side of 50 and we both liked it. The film is "MTVed" to appeal to a younger audience, but the themes of honor, duty, and freedom are strong and drawn in a way for all to see. It is easy to place current politicians and governments in various roles in the film and it is obvious why leftists are pissed off.
