Mayan leaders announced that priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after US President George W. Bush visits next week.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a national association of indigenous people and peasant farmers, said Thursday.
Bush's seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans.
Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites - which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles - would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.
I don't think that's W's style. Rather he thinks it's the right thing to do.
Perhaps you are right.
Me too, but I was SHOCKED at the jumping in the water trough scene!
I was specifically thinking of the President's treatment of Democrats (referred to in the original post) which tends to enfuriate all of us because he is far too kind to them.
I believe that in this man, his treatment of others is a by-product of his upbringing (class), and more importantly his faith.
The question I ask is, if his treatment of Dems is a result of his faith then does he need to set it aside to be a good leader?
btw, I don't think he trusts them any more than we do, nor does he trust world leaders. He just treats them as he believes a Christian ought to. For me, that is a critical difference.
I mean, they could have named her Ah Uincir Dz'acab or Chac Uayab Xoc.
That would have made a fun first day at school. :)
I hope I didn't say anything nasty......
Hmmm, would that include those "ancestors" whom the Mayans put to gruesome death in their ritual human sacrifices?
After tearing the beating hearts out of their still-alive sacrifice-ees?
Juan Tiney, the director of a national association of indigenous people and peasant farmers.......was paid good money to say this to the press.
Just my luck to be born a redneck--we aren't indigenous to anywhere . . . except maybe Telmar (obscure C.S. Lewis reference)!
"...is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture."
You mean like sneaking on to someone else's land and trying to take advantage of their government? That kind of offense? The only time these people should be worried about offense is when they have to climb one.
"I didn't know they were still around."
Well using their logic, let me just say "the Celts hate the Mayans."
"Gee, at least President Bush didn't perform human sacrife like your ancestors did."
I think that was the Aztecs.
Yes, isn't it. I am sorry for that, but this kind of 'crap' is just getting really old for me. Frustration factor is at an all time high.
The way most talk you'd think W was the living breathing anti-christ, and I'm pretty well sick of it.
I've never seen a man so vilified in my life, not just here but abroad too.
Bill Clinto (whom I loath with a deep and abiding passion) makes a mockery of the White House and that's okay, W tries to do his JOB, the job we elected him for and he's mocked at every opportunity.
We get a DEM in 2008, and the World will have one big love-fest, while the citizens of the USA get -- well and plainly fubar.
It's enough to make a person scream.

The Mayans and Aztecs both practiced human sacrifice. Mostly on each other.
