It is with growing dismay and frustration that I am watching so many of my friends and acquaintances in the conservative community attack Ann Coulter for her comments pointing out that saying the word 'faggot' can get you sent to a rehabilitation clinic.
That she said it in the context of primping pretty boy Democrat presidential candidate John Edwards has sent conservatives to the fainting couch in an episode of 'why I never!' mass hysteria.
Ann Coulter has walked point for conservatives for almost a decade. She has been assaulted, threatened and stalked. She requires bodyguards for protection. Liberals believe they are justified in physically attacking Ann. I heard one say so at CPAC--not in response to her rehab joke, but because Ann 'insults people.'
Ann has been an early and loyal friend of Free Republic. She is one of the few prominent conservatives who regularly breaks bread with FReepers. Her friendship is now being repayed by FReepers who want her driven out of conservatism.
That so many conservatives want Ann banned from CPAC is a sad indicator of the state of conservatism. It is not Ann Coulter's fault that Republicans lost both houses of Congress. It is not Ann Coulter's fault that President Bush is not popular. Sacrificing Ann Coulter on the altar of political correctness will not win the elections of 2008 nor will it prevent conservatives from being sent to rehab for uttering politically incorrect words and ideas.
After Ann uttered the words that have given so many conservatives the vapors, the line for her booksigning at CPAC was just as long as usual. I know, I was standing in that line. If CPAC attendees were so outraged about Ann's remarks, it was not manifested there. I didn't learn about the controversy until I read about it online later that night.
I spent the next day at CPAC. Ann's remarks were not a hot topic. I know because the only time I heard it talked about was when I brought it up. Those I spoke with about it were not upset.
I do not wish to speak ill of my friends and acquaintances who are dumping on Ann, other than to express my disappointment. I do wish they'd reconsider and stop attacking a friend who has walked point for them. Liberals must be laughing themselves silly as they watch us take out someone they've been wanting to eliminate for years.
It's unfortunate that she called him that, but I still mostly stand behind her.
Now, I know I'm going to catch as much grief as Ann did, but here goes:
I would like to be a best friend to Ann Coulter.
Why?
The typical woman will say,"Wouldn't you like to go to (popular eatery) for dinner?"
For us ignorant men, we think, "No, I'd rather just stay home after a long day"
The translation of what was just said is,"I want to go out to eat tonight!"
With Ann--what you hear is the direct truth, translator NOT NEEDED.
I support Ann 1000% and spit in the general direction of all weenies here at FR who won't do the same :)
My 56k modem never worked so hard for something so good!
Thanks for the mega-photo of Ann and Mark. Two of my favorite conservatives!
Thank you for posting it. Good luck in rehab liberal-land.
Seriously, this has made front page, headline news, but something I find much more outrageous has been completely buried...
Congress-critter Barney Frank, chairman of a powerful house committee, actually made a joke on Bill Moron's so called comedy show on HBO, that it's a shame the bomb used by the terrorist was "wasted" by not killing Vice-President Cheney! Can you imagine the outcry had a republican or conservative utterred any such thing? Look at the hubbub over what Pat Robertson said about Hugo Chavez, and Robertson hasn't even run for political office in more than a decade!
You've got the chairman of House Financial Services Committee making a joke about the fact that Vice-President Cheney was almost assassinated!?!?!?! Never mind the idiot Maher publicly stated that he wished it would have succeeded: He's a "celebrity," who the hell cares what he thinks. But this is a leader of the democrat party! Where's the outrage over that? Why isn't there a call to have Frank removed, at the very least, from his chairmanship?
I'm outraged over this! Am I the only one on the face of the earth?
Mark
Well, if she gets lonely, I volunteer to cuddle up, nice and close, to Ann! :-)
Honestly, I'll try to like the Grateful Dead.
Mark
Good job, Kristinn.
Why SHOULD the libs be upset about this, anyway? Aren't we taught to tolerate homosexuals and their lifestyle? Aren't we taught to believe that this mindset is a GOOD thing, so in that case, didn't Ann pay Edward a high comment?
[some sarcasm here]
The hysterical reaction on the right, sadly, is a confirmation that the left's tactics have succeeded and succeeded spectacularly.
No better confirmation may be found than the contemptible silence on the left and the mewling and feckless submission on the right to Bill Maher's truly contemptible and vile call for the assassination of Vice-President Dick Cheney, which was made contemporaneously with Coulter's comment.
Coulter's comment has the redeeming characteristic of demonstrating the hypocrisy at work here, at proving in a a particulalrly forceful way that the right has surrendered to the left's assault on language and culture.
I have lost all respect for the self-righteous "honorable" commentators on the right--Malkin, Hewitt, the crew at NRO--who have joined the left in sledghammering Coulter while effectively giving the odious Bill Maher a high-five.
You obviously have been overlooked.
Now, what flavor Kool-Aid would you like?
IOW, you don't like "uppity" women.
There are several FReepers who share your fear and deeply-rooted bias.
You don't believe that there should be political fallout over a joke by a congressional leader who mused about a wasted bomb in a failed assassination attempt? And, as was pointed out to me in a different thread, still took 24 lives?
I'm still outraged, and will continue to be so.
Mark
Good post!
IMO, John Edwards IS kind of faggy...in his manner and speech even though he's not a homosexual. So Ann pointed it out to be able to make a crack about the thought and language police of the left who feel that any time someone says (or thinks or does) something they deem verboten, an announcement of a trip to "rehab" is all it takes to "fix" the problem. It's ridiculous!
"However, I think it was a pretty nasty thing to say about anyone, even a liberal."
Well, that's where we disagree. To me, there is NOTHING too nasty to say about them. They are irrational, hypocritical, dangerous examples of non-thinking idiocy who want to destroy everything our country and our culture ever stood for, while rooting for our enemies to win the war on terror, so they can get "revenge" on George Bush... for winning the Presidency (!).
And we're supposed to feel BAD because Ann Coulter calls one of them (gasp)... a NAME? Oooohhhh. We wouldn't want to hurt their little feelings, would we? After all, that makes US look... um, MEAN!
Meanwhile, it's OK that Edwards ancestors owned slaves!!!!!!
John Edwards is a homosexual?!
