Giuliani up 25 points over McCain: poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani, virtually tied with John McCain (news, bio, voting record) in a January poll, held a 25-point lead over the Arizona senator in a Newsweek magazine survey released on Saturday.

Among registered Republicans, 59 percent said they backed the former New York City mayor and 34 percent said they favored McCain, who announced on Wednesday he would seek the presidency in 2008, Newsweek said.

"Most registered Republicans are not familiar with Giuliani's positions on key social issues," the magazine said, listing his support for abortion rights and gun control as examples.

"When asked about whether Giuliani's views on these same issues would be enough to prevent them from supporting him, few registered Republican voters said it would," it said.

Giuliani was in a statistical dead heat with McCain in a January 24-25 poll, with 48 percent compared to McCain's 44 percent, the magazine said.

Meanwhile, a Newsweek poll of registered Democrats showed Democratic Sen. Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) chipping away at front-runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's lead in the past month.

Clinton enjoyed the support of 52 percent of registered Democrats in the latest poll to Obama's 38 percent. That compared with 55 percent for Clinton and 35 percent for the Illinois senator in late January, Newsweek said.

In a potential general election matchup, Giuliani was virtually tied with Clinton and former Democratic Sen. John Edwards and five points ahead of Obama in a poll of all registered voters.

Newsweek surveyed 1,202 adults on Wednesday and Thursday. The poll included 283 registered Republicans, 342 registered Democrats and 349 independents and had a margin of error of three percentage points.

Most registered Republicans are unfamiliar with Giuliani's position on social issues, with 34 percent of Republicans and 38 percent of social conservatives aware that he favors legalized abortion, the magazine said. And just 16 percent of Republican voters and 15 percent of social conservatives said they know he opposes a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

Only 17 percent of Republican voters and 19 percent of social conservatives know that Giuliani supports gun control, Newsweek said.

Giulianni on gays or abortion I wouldn't know about. Guns, you have to figure that his thinking on what is right for the country versus what is necessary for NY city would have to be somewhat different.

The bottom line is that there is no candidate out there who favors an F-18 in every driveway, so they will all support some form of gun control to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. I wouldn't read too much into any candidate's statement that he is against gun control. It has too many meanings.

Rudy has been NARAL's guest speaker at abortion banquets. And he proudly marched in gay rights parades in the streets of NY.

So Rootie thinks the 2nd Amendment doesn't cover NYC?

With rudy you don't have read much into it. He has said it plainly in his own words.

For those that think it's "old news", see the date of the last quote.

See my profile page for the video link for the following quotes:

CNN clip

Rudy Giuliani: "I'm in favor of gun control"

Meet The Press:

Tim Russert: "How about registration of all handguns?"

Rudy Giuliani: "You know I'm in favor of that. I've been on your show many times."

"Guns, you have to figure that his thinking on what is right for the country versus what is necessary for NY city would have to be somewhat different."

Which is obviously why he called for national handgun licensing / registration and an "assault weapons" ban stronger than what bill clinton signed in 1994.

NY City is a totally different world than the world we live in. I'd assume Giuliani is bright enough to be educable. Demokkrats are not.

I think this result says more about how much conservatives dislike McCain than it does about how much they like Rudy.

GOP "Unaware" of Rudy's Stance on Guns, Gays, Abortion

I'm sure if he gets to the general election against Hillary, the media will be sure to tell them!

Keep posting those Rudy cards.

I don't know if can believe the line that "most Republicans don't know."

Most of his supporters on this forum probably say the same thing, even though they have seen otherwise.

see the last quote in the picture I quoted. As recently as last month he said he favors gun control for handguns. You'd have to assume he'd want a program as strict as new york.

Do you know how difficult it is for a law abiding citizen to get a handgun in new york?

(GOP "Unaware" of Rudy's Stance on Guns, Gays, Abortion)

..there was some cognitive dissonance at CPAC

But as the campaign progresses--a couple of debates etc.--we may see things change--at least the GOP will not be able to plead ignorance...

With rudy you don't have read much into it. He has said it plainly in his own words.

The rest simply think they can get by without making a comprehensive statement of position on it, that's all. At least with Rudy, you know if you want to buy a grenade launcher, he wants you to register it.....

I bet you're glad to have a year-and-a-half to find out.

"At least with Rudy, you know if you want to buy a grenade launcher, he wants you to register it....."

If you want to buy a handgun, he wants you to have to jump through numerous hoops to buy it, and then register it.

He also wants to eliminate anyone's ability to buy what the brady bunch has labeled "assault weapons".

I called my Dad and told him about DH's performance in the SC straw poll. I was shocked when my very conservative father (From CA, no less) told me I was going to "get Hillary" if I supported Hunter.

Of course, by the end of the call, I had him cringing away from Giuliani's record. Hearing the words "Ok, ok, YOU WIN!" first thing in the morning is pretty neat. Heeheehee

You would be correct .. he was dealing with a city rampant with killings and his gun control had nothing to do with a person's normal rights to own a weapon and use it.

And .. he also believes it should be a state's issue .. and it should conform to the 2nd Amendment.

I would hope that at least one of the other candidates will go after Rudy on these issues as hard as Hillary will hammer Obama in their primary.
