Jesus found during Lent? How nice for ratings
The Virginian Pilot ^ | 3/3/07 | Kerry Dougherty

Posted on 03/03/2007 12:37:49 PM PST by wagglebee

Wait one blessed minute.

A Hollywood filmmaker wants us to believe he's found the bones of Jesus - who walked the earth 2,000 years ago - yet we still can't find Jimmy Hoffa, who's only been gone about 32 years?

Please.

And no one can locate Amelia Earhart - she went down with a plane, for heaven's sake - yet producer James Cameron and crew claim they can identify the dusty inhabitants of an ancient Jerusalem tomb. People with common names, by the way.

Then again, millions of us believe the whole exercise is futile because Jesus left no earthly remains.

But that's the point, isn't it?

It's no coincidence that this Jesus-Was-Just-a-Regular-Guy film debuts during Lent. What better time to release a highly speculative documentary, designed to rattle the foundations of Christian faith, than while believers are preparing for the miracle of Easter?

"The Lost Tomb of Jesus" comes to us courtesy of the Discovery Channel. It airs Sunday and will claim to show ossuaries - old boxes - containing the powdery bones of Jesus, his wife (who knew?), Mary Magdalene, their son, Jesus Jr. (again, I had no idea) and Jesus' mother, Mary. And others.

Sorry. I'm not buying it.

Not even if the camera lingers on the skeleton of a little dog in the tomb, wearing a collar that says, "If Found, Please Return to Jesus of Nazareth."

The Discovery Channel held a news conference this week to whip up interest in the show. It worked. The announcement was met with howls of derision from scientists and cries of outrage from Christians.

Except Terry Lindvall.

"I laughed out loud," said the C.S. Lewis chair in communications and Christian thought at Virginia Wesleyan College. "I think it ought to be shown on the Sci Fi Channel.... I t requires all sorts of leaps of logic.

"It's all about ratings," Lindvall added. "People realize they can get on the front page with gossip about anyone."

Even Jesus.

Lindvall, who's teaching a course called "Religion and American Culture" this semester, says many secularists delight in ridiculing religion. He says the astonishing success of "The Da Vinci Code," which was riddled with inaccuracies, was a prime example of a pop culture attack on mainstream Christian beliefs.

Still, the book was on the fiction shelf. The Discovery Channel often deals in fact.

Enter the scientists. Seems they're even more skeptical of the motives and methodologies behind Cameron's movie than are Christians.

The Washington Post reported that "leading archaeologists in Israel and the United States... denounced the purported discovery of the tomb of Jesus as a publicity stunt."

William G. Dever, a non-Christian and respected archaeologist who's been working on digs in the Holy Land for half a century, seems disgusted by the documentary.

"It's a publicity stunt and it will make these guys very rich, and it will upset millions of innocent people, because they don't know enough to separate fact from fiction."

I don't know about that. Some of us will watch precisely because we enjoy fiction.

Still, if Discovery wants to do something useful, it ought to find Hoffa, and leave Jesus alone.

They should be ashamed of themselves showing a KNOWN HOAX.

One year, Jesus was supposed to be a homosexual - that didn't fly.

Another year, He supposedly married Mary.

This year they're claiming He didn't bodily ascend into heaven as the Bible states.

It's ridiculous lies all to UNDERMINE truth and Christianity in vile ways.

Don't fall for this trash.

Since when did James Cameron, a hollywood film maker, become an archeologist?
Who's DNA is he going to compare Jesus's DNA to?
How come Jesus of Nazarith is buried in Jerusalem?

The good news is there is finally someone in Hollywood who has said he has found Jesus. The bad news is there is someone in Hollywood who says he has found Jesus.

Cameron saying this is the actual Jesus Christ because of the name Jesus along with Joseph and Mary, is like going to the Bronx and picking out one Jesus (pronounced Hey-zoo) with a father Jose and mother Maria and saying the same thing. But what do you expect from a fat headed idiot like Cameron who felt it necessary to declare to the world on Oscar night that he was "King of the world"?

May I just make an announcement to Cameron, to Hollywood and to anyone else who attempts to challenge the accuracy of the Holy Bible?

There is only one Author of Truth and it is not YOU!

The left does manufactures a story like this every Easter and Christmas

These seasonal attacks from the left are in fact a validation of the Christian faith.

And the Pope says last Sunday, that the inspiration for this year's Lenten message is a verse from John's Gospel "They shall look on him whom they have pierced (John 19:37)".

How appropriate! (BTW, is there any co-incidence here, or does the man just have his ear to the ground?:) For many, these swipes at Christ only serve to make the Easter holiday ever-more special.

I wouldn't be surprised if this show was funded by the ACLU and NAMBLA!

Last year during lent season I noticed "The Da Vinci Code" was prominently displayed in virtually every table display of Borders books.

Coincidence - again? I think not. Marketers looking to prey on those Christians or those curious about it, who look back their faith during religious seasons.

Or even Marx, Lenin, Stalin or Castro.

I went to Katholic Skool and the black humor offered every holiday season was the same:

"No Easter this year!"

"How Come?"

"They found the body."

or

"No Christmas this year!"

"How Come?"

"Mary confessed."

Come on off it, Jim, it was only a friggin' childish joke!
