I appreciate your efforts here.
I'd call Sen. Thompson more of a moderate conservative than a moderate. I believe that he doesn't believe that abortion is a constitutional right, he's against the homosexual agenda, I believe he's strong on gun rights. It's tough to put him in the moderate category with those bona fides.
However, I haven't examined his record or prior statements all that closely yet. Maybe he is more of a moderate than a moderate conservative.
In any event, my initial impression is that he's a darned sight better candidate for a CONSERVATIVE party than Mr. Giuliani.
If you have good quotes from him, or other specific issue-related material, I'd personally appreciate a ping if you post it.

Actually, I may have been a little too trigger happy when I posted that. The more I search this the more vague his stance on abortion is is. I found this article below.

Thompson's Turn
Senator Thompson's office disputes NR.

he latest issue of NR includes a rundown of possible Bush running mates. In passing, it mentions that Senator Fred Thompson, the Tennessee Republican, has the drawback of being pro-choice. His office called today to say that Thompson is actually pro-life.
Thompson has certainly voted with pro-lifers almost all the time. The National Right to Life Committee counts votes for John McCain-style campaign-finance reform, which Thompson supports, as anti-pro-life votes, but otherwise he's been solid. The senator voted against the Harkin amendment, which put the Senate on record favoring Roe v. Wade. But when Thompson ran for Senate in 1994, he did so as a supporter of legal abortion, as several press clips from the time pointed out. NR has also obtained a copy of a letter Thompson sent to a constituent in 1997, which notes that Thompson supports various restrictions on abortion but also includes the line, "I believe that government should not interfere with individual convictions and actions in this area."
The upshot: Thompson is an ally of pro-lifers in all the actual fights that come up, but he's not one of them on the core issue. Unless, that is, he has changed his mind, as suggested by his current self-description as a pro-lifer. In that case, NR would be more than happy to print a corretion.
That's what I'm praying for.

I understand the vitriol on the Rudy threads (heck, I've participated in it), but why drag it into a thread where there is substantial agreement among everyone that this candidate would advance the cause?
Yup, that's all we need...another politician with the morals of a Clinton.
Seems to me like he brought the conservatives together, after the Gipper left office, and brought out some backbone in them while he was there.
He comes nowhere near equaling Clinton's escapades.

I appreciate your posts as well. It seems like a small minority of posts on these candidate threads address issues -- most of them are people berating anyone who wants to have a discussion.
Now, now, I'm just joking.
Becasue I am sick of being attacked and told I'm not conservative enough, only to have them show up on these threds like everything is fine.
I'm not going to forget, and neither are a lot of other people; do you realize how many people they have run off, not that anybody here cares?
