" Generals when they retire get their full base-pay for the rest of their life"

Not accurate.

Personnel Entering Active Duty 8 Sep 80 - 31 Jul 86 If a member's DIEMS is on or after 8 Sep 80 through 31 Jul 86, retired pay is calculated by using an average of a member's highest 36 months of active duty basic pay, times 2 ½ percent of the member's years of service (based on the 1405 service date).

The law applies to all grades.

It's not as if this general had to do the work himself - painting, repairs, etc. I'm so glad for our soldiers that they threw him out. God Bless our Military!

You're right, he can only expect about $7,000 a month retirement. I always "assumed" that once you step into the general grade you got full retirement.

WashPost ran an "expose" a week or so ago, followed by reports that patient barracks were slums with rats.

"Wonder what is up with this?"

Simple: the wife of Joe Wilson Valerie Plame is a reporter for the Compost and co-wrote the alleged expose telling how Bush hates the troops because he didn't have Walter Reed modernized before 9/11/2002, then sent them to war and expected them to recover without wheelchair ramps. Now there is a scapegoat. He has been fired.

Still waiting for Joe Wilson Plame Valerie Whateverhisnameisnow to be indicted for "outting" his wife.

"They just didn't pay attention to this less-critical facility and the ComPost blew it in their faces and embarassed the Army."

From what I saw and see there (1996 to present) is they IGNORED aftercare and support functions. They are responsible for the mess. Had they run a tight ship the ComPost, Imus, and others would not have had a story. What p%%ses me off is blowhards like Fidel Murtha and John Scary like to brag about how often they're over at Walter Reed, how much they "care" for the troops, but made no effot to take a look at the whole system. As long as no cameras or reporters were around they weren't interested. They both claim to be vets so they should have known where to look. Someone should ask these sorry excuses for Americans how they managed to miss these issues if they friggin' "care" about the troops.

"So do the wounded soldiers have their First Amendment rights back yet?"

What...they're not allowed to talk? So whom did the two Compost reporters interview? Who's complaining face was that I saw on TV? HE was sure talking up a storm. Sounds like he was exercising his First Amendment right to ME. Was he an actor? Was he a FAKE??

Caution: WRAMC is of intense interest to DC real estate developers.

Wait till Hillary becomes President. Universal Health Care will solve all these problems. Right?

I thought WRAMC was supposed to be combined with the National Naval Medical Center?

This is suspect in my mind.

They've already decided to close Reed because it's a rat-trap. It was a rat-trap every time I visited it since the early 70's. It always looked like hell.

I'm afraid this new secdef is overly sensitive to the media.

Rummie would've told them to take a hike...that they already knew it was junk, that it was junk when they'd inherited it, and that it'd been junk since LBJ.

Knowing as I do how loathe military members are to talk to the press, I wonder how many actually first appealed to their Congressmen. And if they did, what did said Congressman/woman do about it? Did their staff investigate or merely take the word of whatever WRAMC told them.

And, as a PAO, I'm sure you know servicemembers don't have to follow chain-of-command (although, highly recommended) when appealing to their elected officials. Sometimes military leadership forgets this.

"Wait till Hillary becomes President. Universal Health Care will solve all these problems. Right."

BINGO BINGO BINGO! You've hit the nail on the head of one of the major problems with military care - the TRICARE system which has been mismanaged since which Administration?!

"the TRICARE system which has been mismanaged since which Administration?!" You wrote

Ahh yes, that's another great "social system" I don't miss.

But you make one huge miscalculation! We WILL get national (AKA social) health care soon. It is actually corporate America which would love to see this happen since it reduces costs and risk for them. National health care means cheap managed health care with limited legal recourse. Hillary will actually get the support of many large US firms. Walmart for example has on numerous occasions mentioned that they favor such a "national" program.

> Let's not get carried away here...WRAMC did a lot of very good work under his charge. They just didn't pay attention to this less-critical facility and the ComPost blew it in their faces and embarassed the Army.

I wonder if you would call it a "less-critical" facility if your dad or brother who had lost their legs or a chunk of their skull had to live with rats and mold on the walls. I wonder if YOU would be "carried away". I bet you would.

The Post is usually a Commie paper, but their real job is to expose evil, and they actually did their job this time. I don't care WHO was "embarrassed"-- they SHOULD be ashamed.

If the staff and budget are overwhelmed it was the job of this guy to scream to higher levels to get additional resources, money, and staff to fix the problem.

If he did this, and the problem was in the higher levels not responding, I stand corrected on my excoriation of him.
