Japan's Abe: No Proof of WWII Sex Slaves
AP ^ | March 1, 2007 | KOZO MIZOGUCHI

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday there was no evidence Japan coerced Asian women into working as sex slaves during World War II, backtracking from a landmark 1993 statement in which the government acknowledged that it set up and ran brothels for its troops.

Abe's comments to reporters came as a group of ruling party lawmakers urged the government to revise the so-called Kono Statement, which states that Japan's wartime military sometimes recruited women to work in the brothels with coercion.

"The fact is, there is no evidence to prove there was coercion," Abe said. "We have to take it from there."

Historians say that up to 200,000 women, mainly from Korea and China, were forced to have sex with Japanese soldiers in brothels run by the military government as so-called "comfort women" during the war.

This might surprise many Korean and Chinese women. Remarkably, I've heard few tales of the English and Australian women capture in Indochina and Singapore being used this way. Imprisoned and forced to work as slaves, yes.

But not used in sex shops for the Japanese troops.

No they didn't.

They were forced, not coerced.

"The fact is, there is no evidence to prove there was coercion,"

Yes, Korean women just volunteered to service thousands of Japanese soldiers, without renumeration. Those sluts!

But that only makes sense.

In WWII Japanese mentality, white women were humans.

Korean and Chinese were a little less.

This is going to rub a lot the wrong way, but pretty much in a hyper racialized Japan, it made sense.

A few Filipinas could set them straight. I'll never forget hearing a first hand account of this from a woman who had so much hate in her eyes while spoke of the japs. She was only nine when the subjected her to this.

Whatever Japan might have been guilty of 60 or 70 years ago she has been a fine "world citizen" since. The same cannot be said of those countries who are beating the drums today.

China....North Korea....take a close look at your more *recent* record of respecting human rights at home and abroad.

Typical Japanese humble understatedness, after all did'nt the Emperor say "that the war had necessairly developed to Japan's advantage" after we had incinerated about a half-million folks in a handful of air-raids and destroyed their navy and airforce?

"Give big hornet's nest one smart smack."

Yes, there are enough undisputed atrocities that were committed by the Imperial military all over the world that you'd think they'd let this sleeping dog lie.

Japan is a complicated country/culture/society.

Two things to remember: They are always going to be racist, and they arem, at the bottom line, always going to be Japanese.

This is in line with recent statements about having to "revive" nationalism. The new world order is presenting Japan with a new set of circumstances that have to be dealt with in a whole new way.

And the whole new way is to reach back into themselves and "be Japanese".

Look for much, much more of this kind of thing. Even look for Official Visits to Yaskuni-jinja.
