A measure filed today in the Texas Legislature would allow illegal immigrants to get Texas drivers licenses, 1200 WOAI news has learned.
State Representative Armando Martinez, who represents the city of Weslaco, on the Rio Grande, says his measure would require that the Texas Department of Public Safety, which issues drivers licenses, accept the 'Matricula Consular' card as legal identification in issuing a license.
The 'Matricula Consular' is a card issued by the Mexican government to its citizens who are in the United States, regardless of whether they are in this country legally or illegally. Martinez's bill stresses that the identification card issued by a foreign government 'must include the applicant's photograph, full name, and date of birth' and the 'other country must have a reasonable mechanism by which the department can verify the identify document.'
Martinez tells 1200 WOAI news illegals are already driving in Texas anyway, and this law would require that they have driving skills and follow the rules of the road.
"If an illegal gets pulled over and gets a ticket, then what do we do with that," Martinez said. "How can we enforce the law and how can we get them to pay for that ticket? How can we go and find that person."
Phony Texas drivers licenses are easily purchased at flea markets and other locations, generally for about $30.
"My bill would make sure that they are driving the way the law is stated here in Texas," Martinez said.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger last year vetoed a bill that would have allowed that state to issue drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. Two measures introduced in Congress would bar states from issuing drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.
Martinez says his bill would require that any drivers license that is issued to a person who uses a foreign identification card be printed sideways, like licenses issued to Texans under 21 current are. He says that would make security officials who rely on the drivers license for access to secure locations demand a second form of identification.
"A person that would have that type of drivers license would have to have a passport, a second form of identification, something of that nature," he said.
The State of texas should be held liable for any damages created by persons driving under this Horse crap law.
Martinez should be held personally liable as well.

I'm all for giving illegals cards.....make them glow in the dark.....so that they will be easy to spot.... so we can grab them, take their shoes and push them back over the border.
Just saw this on Fox this morning a documentary called Border which the congress will be watching today on capital hill.

THEY DO NOT WANT LICENSES.
They think that this is their home country. They think we stole this land from them. They are not going to pay even if they did get a ticket and they will not go to court if they say they will.
GET A GRIP.

Maybe we can get Fox to show this like they did Obcession
That's beside the point. The truth is that Martinez and his ilk fear a backlash from voters. It's not about accuracy or honesty. It's about pandering.
That and keeping the voting base padded...
That's a easy answer!.. they can pay for it with their California Well's Fargo Credit Card they have just been issued!!!!!
"If an illegal gets pulled over and gets a ticket, then what do we do with that," Martinez said. "How can we enforce the law and how can we get them to pay for that ticket? How can we go and find that person."
Hey Martinez, here's a novel idea. If you pull over an illegal, and find that he's an ILLEGAL, SEND HIM HOME! Geeeze, is this rocket science or what?
It's time for civil war in Texas.
Gee, since we're going to abandon our system of laws since we can't fight all the illegals, let's make it legal for convicted murderers and robbers to own guns, allow pedophiles to work in daycare, recruit drug addicts to the DEA . . . . . .
Who comes up with these stupid ideas, anyway???
This proves that some legislators are dumb.
How in the world can they follow the rules of the road if they can't speak/understand english?!?
Still in his Third World banana republic thinking mode.
Got any other bright ideas, Generalissimo Martinez?
All this chatter is OK - however - the definition of the term illegal is still just that - ILLEGAL.
But whatever is done - don't do anything too fast - must get the freeway contracts that DOT has farmed out taken care of first.
