BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents launched an attack on a U.S. combat post on Monday, sending in a suicide bomber and clashing with American troops, the military and residents said. Two U.S. soldiers were killed and 17 wounded, the military said.

The assault began with a suicide bomber exploding a vehicle outside the base north of Baghdad, said the military statement. It gave no further details beyond the number of dead and wounded. Residents said U.S. forces fought with insurgents after the suicide bomber tried to break through barriers around the base.

At least 30 die in Iraq attacks

A number of bombings and mortar attacks in Iraq have left about 30 people dead and many wounded.
The violence comes despite an intensified security operation in the capital, Baghdad, and across Iraq.

Eleven people, including five police officers, died in a car bomb attack near Ramadi in western Anbar province.

About 20 people were also killed in violence in Baghdad, including 11 in a mortar attack on a Shia enclave in the southern districts of the city.

New measures

Meanwhile, two US soldiers were killed and 17 others were wounded after a suicide attack at a "combat outpost" north of Baghdad.

The US has created these so-called combat outposts in several districts as part of the new security plan.

The aim is for troops to live, work and conduct operations from these outposts rather than return to US military bases.

Two days ago, two US soldiers were killed while on patrol in the capital as part of the new measures.

The bombing in Ramadi occurred outside the home of prominent Sunni leader Sattar al-Reshawi. He was not at home at the time.

On Sunday, two car bombs went off at a crowded Baghdad market leaving more than 60 people dead.

Snippet from article from July 2, 2006:

U.S., Iraqi forces make town oasis of security in a desert of violence

By Tom Lasseter July 2, 2006

TARMIYAH, Iraq – While much of the area around the town of Taji, Iraq, is racked with sectarian violence and insurgent attacks on U.S. troops, Tarmiyah is one of the successes.

Soldiers used to call the main road in Tarmiyah “the racetrack.” When patrols came through the Sunni town, north of Baghdad, they gunned their engines and drove as fast as possible, hoping not to be hit by a shower of rocket-propelled grenades.

AdvertisementTarmiyah was controlled by insurgents who roamed the streets with AK-47s. There were 20 policemen in a town of 45,000 residents.

Iraqi police said a suicide bomber at the wheel of a fuel tanker blew himself up as U.S. forces entered an Iraqi police station in the town of Tarmiya, which U.S. troops use as an outpost.

The town is a Sunni Arab insurgent stronghold some 40 km (25 miles) north of Baghdad in the notoriously violent province of Salahaddin.

I heard the news blurb on ABC radio this morning at work. Naturally the highly unbiased (smirk)speaker announced the American deaths without once mentioning how many attackers were killed or even the outcome of the engagement.

"This attack reads like a replay of the start of the TET Offensice in Vietnam where the Viet Cong launched suicide attacks against US bases all over South Vietnam at the same time."

This attack is to TET what a bolt-action .22 cal rifle is to a .50 cal machine gun.

Militants hit Iraq base, kill 2 U.S. GIs

By BRIAN MURPHY, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents staged a bold daylight assault against a U.S. combat post north of the capital Monday — first striking with a suicide car bombing, then firing on soldiers pinned down in a former Iraqi police station. At least two soldiers were killed and 17 wounded, the military said.

Elsewhere, three U.S. soldiers were killed and two were wounded in a roadside bombing southwest of Baghdad on Monday, the U.S. military said. The military also announced the deaths of three Marines and one soldier since Saturday while conducting combat operations in the western province of Anbar.

Altogether, nine U.S. service members have been reported killed since the beginning of the weekend, six of them on Monday.

My concern was my daughter's boyfriend. He is there and in a dangerous occupation.

Recently a suicide bomber blew up in a truck. It was about one to three football fields away from him and his fellow Wolfhounds. They thought a mortar had hit on the other side of the wall from them. The worst to any of his fellows was broken glass cuts.

Nine Iraqui soldiers were killed. According to my daughter's boyfriend (doesn't the term boyfriend not seem to fit for a fighting soldier) (but, after all, I am a dad). The Iraquis in that town are becoming more hostile to the terrorists. According to the soldier, the Iraqui citizens are communicating to the terrorists that they are not welcome, and they are being asked increasingly harshly to stop killing Iraquis.

Hopefully the hostility to the terrorists is on the upswing. I sure hope he and his fellow Wolfhounds kill every islamofascist with a bullet.

Oh, you're sick and tired of the war? Well, that's the point of the MSM's reporting, isn't it? They -and the people who listen to them, have been promoting terrorist causes since 1973. Wakeup.

I listen to both sides, not just the cheerleading side, spud. I think for myself and I'm quite awake, thank you very much.

Charles McCord reading the news during the 5:30 early edition of the Imus program with video of the damaged US outpost. One of the suicide bombers was the driver of a fuel truck and the main building was close to being totally destroyed. AQ is claiming responsibility.

Shades of the attack on the Marine Barracks in Beirut.

Fresh violence rocks Iraq capital

The US military in Iraq says another five American soldiers have been killed by insurgents in the past day.

Three US troops died in a roadside bomb in south-west Baghdad and two more in a suicide car bombing targeting a newly set up combat outpost north of Baghdad.

Separately, two people were killed and dozens hurt when a chemicals tanker was blown up in Taji, north of Baghdad.

And two car bombs killed at least eight other people and wounded 30 in south-west and south Baghdad.

Correspondents say the attacks come as militants are showing increasing defiance to a major security operation launched by US forces and their Iraqi government allies.

The outpost in Tarmiya, set up under the new security plan, was badly damaged when it was hit be an explosives-laden vehicle.

The head-on attack was described as unusual for both the tactics and the target.

I have been unsettled about this outpost strategy ever since I heard about it. Too much of a risk if you ask me!

I do not like it one bit.

Insurgents strike U.S. post
On Monday, insurgents staged a bold daylight assault against a U.S. combat post north of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and injuring 17. The U.S. military called it a “coordinated attack” — which began with a suicide car bombing and then gunfire on soldiers pinned down in a former Iraqi police station, where fuel storage tanks were set ablaze by the blast.

The head-on attack in the town of Tarmiyah, about 30 miles north of Baghdad, was notable for both its tactics and target. Sunni insurgents have mostly used hit-and-run ambushes, roadside bombs or mortars on U.S. troops and stayed away from direct assaults on fortified military compounds to avoid U.S. firepower.

It also appeared to fit a pattern emerging among the suspected Sunni militants: trying to hit U.S. forces harder outside the capital rather than confront them on the streets during a massive American-led security operation.

U.S. forces have set up cordons throughout Tarmiyah and launched searches for insurgent hideouts.

Mohammed al-Askari, spokesman for Iraq’s Defense Ministry, blamed the attack on a cell of al-Qaida in Iraq, which has claimed responsibility for many high-profile strikes. “It’s their work,” he said.

Altogether, nine U.S. service members have been reported killed since the beginning of the weekend, six of them on Monday.
