Giuliani's problem with the religious [large graphics]

Posted on 02/18/2007 4:12:23 PM PST by Jim Robinson

I don't know about you, but I doubt the Christian conservatives throughout the red state farm belt and especially down in the South are going to cotton to a liberal New York Yankee coming down to try to clean up crime by taking their guns and bringing abortion and gay unions (gay marriage) into their families, schools and churches.

The President is not a legislature or the courts - which is where the 'social issues' are legislated. So the whole threat of Rudy's stated personal views on these issues is WAYYYY overblown.

Why not just forget Rudy and elect someone that doesn't require me to hold my nose while I vote?

Ultra social conservative Pat Robertson thinks Rudy would make a good president.

Funny, you had a different opinion about Pat when he called for Chavez to be assasinated:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1469123/posts

Robertson isn't a terrorist, but he sure has a big mouth and speaks about things which he should not discuss publicly.

I'm hardly an apologist for Chavez by saying that Robertson, who is a religious leader, should not be recommending that the US assassinate a world leader. #1. It's against the law. #2. Robertson doesn't think this conflicts just a tad with his Christian believes?

Apparently YOU RAISED THE POINT that Pat makes statements that conflict with his Christian beliefs. I'd say his endorsement of a pro-abort Rudy Giuliani is consisent with that, then.

Thanks for framing the debate for us.

One more thing. We, all of us, must understand that winning by balkanizing the electorate--which is happening here--is one of hillary clinton's preferred methods of operation,

What I am suggesting here is that it is not unreasonable to assume that some of the morally inconsistent anti-Rudy rants are being produced by clinton machine hires pretending to be Christians, assigned with 'the task of agitating: rubbing resentments, fanning hostilities, and searching out controversy,' splitting a formidable opposition into feckless parts.

And it's working, isn't it?

Dear Al Simmons,

"A tactical retreat in the face of a surging enemy means living to fight another day (see Dunkirk, 1940)."

There is a difference between tactical retreat and abject surrender.

Nominating Mr. Giuliani is more like the French accepting the Nazi-imposed Vichy government after surrendering to the Germans with little more than a whimper.

You can't seriously believe that Hillary fears Rudy? Lord, she's hoping against hope he's the nominee!

Do a search on New Jersey and see what happens when the NRA types felt that Bret Schundler wasn't PRO GUN enough.

The NRA folks stayed home because they believed a lie from McGreevy about gun locks and didn't endorse Schundler.

McGreevy was elected......and the rest is history.

Evidently some people never learn. Too bad we have to pay the price for their unappeasable demands.

and as far as clintonian imposters fanning flames? hey, i have no idea, i guess it's possible. but the majority of freepers that i talk to who are adamantly against a rudy candidacy, i have known here on FR for years and more than just superficially. and contrary to what others have said, they aren't former brigadiers and alan keyes fans either. they are your regular freepers, who supported President Bush's candidacy and presidency. it isn't just the FRINGERS that aren't in favor of rudy as a republican nominee, it's NORMAL PEOPLE too.

Mia, given that Giuliani has said that most of his policies are similar to Clinton's, the consequences of a Hillary win vs. a Rudy win are negligible, not dire.

Nominating Rudy is as close to a perfect strategy that a liberal could devise to ensure that the next president is a liberal, which is why I question the motives of the Rudy supporters. It would seem as if they've thrown every issue but the war under the bus and then expect us to believe that a mayor with no foreign policy or military experience from one of the most liberal states in America is a safe steward for the war. Sorry, don't think so.

If Rudy is nominated, it will be time to throw the GOP under the bus and work on behalf of the Constitution Party.

So your solution is to support a guy guaranteed to balkanize the GOP. Gotcha.

I have one word for you: MAD.

Mutually assured destruction.

Rudy is a street fighter--and a street fighter with DOJ connections, unlike those faux doctrinally pure non-urban wimp alternatives I hear bandied about--(and this, BTW, includes Newt--whenever he went head-to-head against clinton, he curtseyed).

Let the clintons 'bring it on.' And watch the redacted Barrett report pages and the Ford Building rape evidence magically appear... not to mention terrorism failure evidence and evidence of sedition, etc., etc....

Sure, Mia. Whatever keeps your paranoia going.

The Dems don't need to hire anyone to rip into Rudy's liberal positions. Any conservative with core values such as being pro-life, pro-gun and anti-amnesty is more than willing to do that for free.

That's hilarious and an insult to good men at the same time. Duncan Hunter was a Ranger and airborne in Vietnam. Rudy got a deferment.

--(and this, BTW, includes Newt--whenever he went head-to-head against clinton, he curtseyed).

And Rudy supported many Clinton initiatives, including gun control.

Except that Rudy thinks Bill Clinton did all he could to fight terrorism.

So you just made strong arguments AGAINST RUDY - yet you not only support him, but you accuse his principled critics of being DU plants. You make no sense at all.

Rudy wouldn't know. He got a deferment.

Don't ya love how the hard-core Rudy boosters call someone like Hunter a "wimp" when he was airborne in the Vietnam War? They are shameless.

The accuracy and context of that quote aside, a person is more than the sum of his policy positions.

That said, let's assume for a minute that you are right. Rudy is a liberal. (ASIDE: I would argue that calling him a liberal is just as spurious as calling him a conservative. He is some of both and some of none.)

Surely you aren't suggesting that there is no difference between electing a liberal and electing a Stalinist? You lose all credibility when you make that argument.

Sometimes you must go outside the system to save the system. Lincoln understood that and saved the nation. Would that some on this forum understood this, too.

Rudy G. has done an interview recently stating that New York's gun control was one of the reasons for his reduction in the city's crime rate.

It isn't a matter of not gun friendly enough, he is a poster boy for the Brady CEnter...
