Jonah Goldberg: Inherit the Wind. What if it takes a Democrat? (Maybe a Democrat should win)
National Review ^ | Feb. 16, 2007 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 02/17/2007 9:22:00 PM PST by FairOpinion

This wisp of a notion is simply this: Maybe a Democrat should win in 2008.

Personally, I don’t believe in this poltergeist, at least not yet. But every now and then, I must confess, I do shiver from its touch.

The idea goes something like this: If you believe that the war on terror is real — really real — then you think it is inevitable that more and bloodier conflicts with radical Islam are on the way, regardless of who is in the White House. If the clash of civilizations is afoot, then the issues separating Democrats and Republicans are as pressing as whether the captain of the Titanic is going to have fish or chicken for dinner. There’s a showdown coming. Period. Full stop. My task isn’t to convince you that this view is correct (though I basically believe it is), but merely that it is honestly and firmly held by many on the right and by a comparative handful on the left.

This is insanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't fathom that any conservative could possible wish this, yet I have seen this quite a few times and here it is again.

Even though the conservatives can see the damage the Democrats do to the country, there are some that want to see the country destroyed in the totally insane belief that once its destroyed, people will start to appreciate conservatives. Well, this approach is no different from the views of the Dems, who don't care about the troops, or the country, just so they capture and keep power.

Only "true conservatives" would wish for a Democratic victory.

The principle is good in theory, but there's just one flaw: The American public's memory and/or curiosity are far too weak for this to do any good.

if you read alot of the FR political threads, you can see this theme evident right here. many people would rather see Hillary win, then see the social conservatives loose their control over the republican party. they all tell me - "we'll survive the Hillary presidency".

yeah sure, the last time they had it, their 8 years of stewardship led to the destruction of the two tallest buildings in lower manhattan, and the destruction of part of the Pentagon. But "we'll survive" they promise me.

SOME conservatives don't seem to grasp the IRREPARABLE damage the Democrats can do.

Carter, in his one term in office helped give rise to radical Islam by refusing to help our best friend in the Middle East, the Shah of Iran and allowed the Ayatollah to take over and turn Iran into what it is today, a terrorist Islamic country about to acquire nukes.

Then Clinton turned tail and ran out of Somalia, which encouraged Bin Laden to plan 9-11.

First of all .. your premise is lunacy.

Secondly, there is no such thing as a "Democratic" victory. There's only a DEMOCRAT victory .. get it!

And .. if a Democrat wins in 2008 .. WE WILL HAVE MORE THAN ONE 9/11 (OR WORSE) IN 2008 OR 2009. It's practically a given!

Now .. please explain to me why any "true conservative" in their right mind would want that for their country ..??

Put a Democrat in the Whitehouse in 2008?

How much of the country would they give away to radical Islamists trying to appease them before someone finally stood up to them?

With their "non-binding" votes this week, it is plainly apparent that yellow is their favorite color.

I don't see how someone claiming to be a conservative could even contemplate such a thing.

Jonah Goldberg is supposed to be a conservative, but he must have taken leave of his senses.

It seems conservatives still don't grasp the threat the Democrats present to the very survival of the country.

Even after seeing how Bill Clinton treated the terrorist attacks -- basically ignoring them -- they think that having a Dem president with a Dem Congress will make them realize the seriousness of the threat. How deluded can you get?!!!!!!

Agree completely re: the American public's memory and/or curiosity, TC. No real future for the land of Oprah, IMHO. Pretty sure it was Thurber who, in a fable about wolves and (digested) rabbits, moralized that any who could should run, not walk, to the nearest deserted island.

Only "true conservatives" feel the need to teach their fellow "conservatives" and especially RINO's a lesson.

Read FR sometime, you'll find it to be the case.

Actually, I've thought of this on a different level. First, I don't believe democrats are anti-war, they are just anti-war if it might make a Republican Commander in Chief popular. The dim media machine does a daily dismantling of any good news while trumpeting the slightest whisper of bad news, vis a vis the war effort.

Conversely, with a dim in power, the press would only report success and downplay failure. Republicans, being patriotic, would also support the war effort.

Thus, and only thus, I am afraid, do we present a united face to our foreign enemies.

I know it's convoluted but it may be the only way to get the country massively behind what it might take to actually win.

Insane? Not if you want to actually win the war on terror. We can't do it with half the population 'tied behind our back.'

and to add to that - the issues the social conservatives are trying to protect - a Hillary presidency will end those for a generation. her SCOTUS picks will affirm Roe, and will also toss the defense of marriage act, overriding states rights in deciding their own gay civil union laws.

CA -- zarf was being sarcastic, just figured it was obvious and didn't add the sarcasm tag.

He was sarcastic, because there are indeed conservatives who hold those view -- Jonah Goldberg seems to be one and I am sure you have run into similar posts here.

That's why you thought it's real.

there won't be a "war effort" at all. unless you call shooting a few Taliban every month in afghanistan, a "war".

No, the author is making the point if the democrats were in control they would begin to appreciate the nature of the Islamic enemy we face.

Democrats don't want to win, they just want to get and maintain power.

They really want to vote "3rd party" too. Alan Keyes is waiting on the sidelines to lead them in their cause, which ultimately means the Clintons' return to the White House. "All or nothing" is that philosophy it seems, and it's a destructive one.
