Fortune: Year of Pig Will Bring Disater

HONG KONG - Sunday marks the start of the Chinese New Year and it's a lucky one for those starting out in life. But the rest of us are in for a rough ride. Expect epidemics, disasters and violence in much of the world.

"The Year of the Pig will not be very peaceful," said Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo.

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of trying to achieve health, harmony and prosperity by using specific dates, numbers, building design and the placement of objects.

The pig is one of 12 animals (or mythical animals in the case of the dragon) on the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, which follows the lunar calendar. According to Chinese astrology, people born in pig years are polite, honest, hardworking and loyal. They are also lucky, which is why many Chinese like to have babies in a pig year.

"Any children born in The Year of Pig will receive help from others throughout their lives," Lo said.

Ronald Reagan was a pig. So are Arnold Schwarzenegger, Woody Allen and Elton John. Not to mention Hillary Rodham Clinton.

But a word of caution to the presidential candidate.

The pig finished last in the race that determined the zodiac's order, behind the dog.

Wait till Suha Arafat finds out who kissed her in 1999 in Ramallah.

With Iraq conflict in full tilt and Iran menacing who needs feng shui to tell them that?

I don't remember 1996 as being all that bad, or 1985 for that matter.

I don't remember 1996 as being all that bad, or 1985 for that matter.

It goes in 12 year cycles. The last Year of the Pig was 1995, before that 1983.

Supposedly, every fifth cycle (60 years) is similar.
For example, 1941 brought us Pearl Harbor; sixty years later, in 2001, we had 9-11.

With that in mind, we need to consider 1947, which was a rather uneventful year (I wasn't here then and I might be wrong)--perhaps it would be so bad after all.

Oh my God, 1947 was when the tide in the Chinese civil war turned to the Communists' favours, and the year when it dawned on the then US Presdient Harry Truman that the West was in a showdown against the Soviet Union. It could be said the Cold War started in that year.

Not to mention India became independent in that year and the partitioning of British India into Pakistan (then included today's Bangladesh) and India, and the endless bloodsheds that accompanied the partition.

I could understand where they are coming from had this been Hong Kong or other places in East Asia. To Hong Kong, Iran and Iraq, the reasoning goes, "aren't really problems, and even if they were, they are not our problems".

"Expect epidemics, disasters and violence in much of the world."

I call that a pretty safe bet.

So far, so good. :-)
