I know that my brother-in-law is required to still pay child support for his 20 year old daughter.

I've never been divorced. I don't know the legal ramifications of divorce, so I think it is a legal question for a divorce judge.

The judge may tell the parent that they have to help pay for college. I have no idea.

Agreeded, there should be a moral obligation, but never a legal one.

The judge can say "yes sweetie make them squeal like a pig" or laugh the little darling out of court.

No man's life, liberty or property are safe as long as court is in session.

She called me the other day to tell me what she would like to have for her birthday from her uncle and me; I told her to sue me for it.

LOL, good for you.

Funny quote, but it misses the point. The only way they have support is through the parents that make money. So if parents can't afford it because they paid too much in taxes for the poor kid to go...that doesn't sound fair.

We probably do pay too much in taxes, but usually the people who say they pay too much in taxes to afford X also have other budget issues involving big status cars, eating out too often, expensive vacations, and/or more home than they really need. In my experience as an accountant. I'm not saying tax relief isnt a good thing; just never underestimate people's ability to blow money.

But who are we to say how someone should spend their money? On top of that I'd say those that are poor blow their money and make worse choices throughout their lives, so we shoudl subsidize that behavior? You know the type I'm referring to...those that buy cigs and beer with their checks and worry about rent and food later. So why should we reward that behavior? If anything, I'd rather reward the guy that paid more in taxes and blew his money on cars, houses, and clothes than the idiot that couldn't keep a job and spent his money on drugs.

No parent should be forced to do anything they don't want to.

That said, I am paying my daughter's tuition for her to get her Associates degree. If she wants to pursue a degree higher than that, then she is on her own.

Who is the lawyer who took on this case and who is footing the legal bill?

I'm thinking the father had a hand in this, but I think the court fees are forced on the mother as well. She said that the atterny fees is added in.
