Required? No. Never.

That being said, I'm giving my daughter an educational stipend every month she's in school.

The thing is that it basically becomes required because all the colleges factor in the PARENTS financial status in determining who gets into school and what kind of assistance they qualify for: grants v. loans.

Here's the crock. The gov't looks at the parents income to determine grants and loans for the student. Why? The parents are no longer required to support that adult, so why look at their income?

Required? Nope. It would be nice but shouldn't be required.

When did college become a right and not a privilege?

It became a right when scholarships could not fulfill all of the minority/illegalalien/foreign students needs. So if you are middle income you will pay if Junior says he wants his college degree. His higher costs subsidize the other students. I knew you would be pleased.

Exactly. A gift is a gift. What would you do if your kid said that isn't enough so I'll sue you for the rest?

My neice is sueing my sister-in-law for college. I can't believe this can actually happen.

If you don't love your children and have a good enough relationship that you are glad to pay for any education they can get, then there are deeper problems.

I will be happy to do whatever I can forever for my daughters.

lol, my sister, who was 45 at the time, went for a student loan. Married, mother of 4 children, (she also owned free and clear two homes) the college asked for her fathers signature to process the loan.

Unfortunately, her father had passed away more than 5 years before that. Where do you draw the line.

They did that 30 years ago when I went to school. I didn't qualify for the BEOG (replaced I believe by the Pell Grant) because my parents owned their home. It didn't matter that I had 6 younger brothers and sisters living at home.

no,
and parents should not be required to co-sign educational loans either--
and having said this ,
children should be educated and trained in the "art" of saving and managing money.

The trick is to have them move into an apartment and become self supporting, if you want them to really be considered on their own.

I know it sucks...

In a 2 parent household, they shouldn't be forced.

Now, in the case of a divorce if before the divorce there was a plan for the kids to go to college, then maybe a parent should be required to pay.

Yeah and only the current status. My dad was a career Marine, who retired my senior year, and got a high paying civilian job. I was ineligible for grants and scholarships because with that high income he should have been saving for my college for decades.

Because I had to work my way through college I never quite finished, got a job as a full time engineer before I graduated and had to drop out.

If they haven't grown up enough to pay their own way in life by 18, boot their tails out.
