I have spoken to several men who have been in prison and they say the rape concept is way overblown. Most cellmates are reluctant to rape their cellie for fear they might kill them in their sleep. Besides cells, men are rarely unsupervised long enough to rape anyone. Where are you going to go where no one can hear you scream in a prison?
I agree with your assesment of the cellie rule, but how much of it happens because it is "allowed" to happen by guards, etc.?
"Where are you going to go where no one can hear you scream in a prison?"

Good point. In fact, one of the early promo ads for the original "Alien" movie with Sigourney Weaver stated "In space, no one can hear you scream."
I've heard the same thing however the police love this particular urban legend. Nothing gets a suspect singing faster than the threat of being raped in jail.
I'm sure it does happen depending on the jail but if you put many criminals together in one location you're going to experience all kinds of crime, rape being one of them.
"Where are you going to go where no one can hear you scream in a prison?"
You assume that stifling those screams will be necessary. And keep in mind that some guards rape, too.
Or long enough to beat up a former Border Patrol agent, right?
While there is some truth in what you wrote, there are far too many poorly run prisons where officials do look the other way and/or are understaffed. There is no excuse for bribery and prisoners getting a hold of contraband, but it still happens a lot.
These days our prison system as a whole is probably America's greatest shame. Lots of reasons, from both the left and right, that led up to where we are, but it is inexcusable and we need reforms.
Oh, gosh, I've heard that brutal, smelly, strong, handsome men rape other men in prison. Sure hope it doesn't happen to me! I sleep with my buttocks slightly up in the air, but that's not a sign -- even if I do wiggle them from time to time. I sure hope that it never happens to me.... (sigh)
