I have spoken to several men who have been in prison and they say the rape concept is way overblown

I've heard the same thing however the police love this particular urban legend. Nothing gets a suspect singing faster than the threat of being raped in jail.

I'm sure it does happen depending on the jail but if you put many criminals together in one location you're going to experience all kinds of crime, rape being one of them.

The old Soviet Union used to love to sentence the political prisoners and then throw em in with the common thugs to get their brains raped out of them. Savagery and thuggery are not a part of the sentencing process.
