Food for thought.
HRW is wrong about a lot of things, but this isn't one of them. The gist of the report is that racist revenge rape is universal in local and federal detentional facilities. Multiculturalism does not exist Inside; there it's survival of the fittest, and unless you are physically strong and/or backed by a racial gang of your own race, you are fair game. If you are white, you will almost certainly be targeted.
I notice a considerable amount of gloating on FR when a story about inmate rape is posted. Those tempted to gloat would be well advised to remember that it is very easy to end up in slam in the United States, even if you're 100% innocent. The next time it could be you that is on the wrong side of those bars.
Note to self: Don't get 3 DUIs
Current Score:
DUI's 0
I bet this is why Richard Hatch failed to pay his taxes so he could enjoy this type of prison life.
I've always been a strong believer that it is society that extracts justice, not a bunch of thugs in a prison. While I am not always pleased by what passes for justice in our society, I am always appalled to read of rape.
Rape is horrifying regardless of gender. However, I'm wondering that this fellow is in jail on a 3rd DUI while I just read another where a fellow is footloose and fancy free while committing his 5th DUI. Interesting!

This is pretty shocking and disgusting.
Then I think about the man who murdered my aunt and was sentenced to less than 20 years.
Prison is hell and Im ok with that.
Probably the absolutely worst thing about being sent to prison is the subhumans you're forced to live with. Just comopare that to living with two or three friendly dogs and a boa constrictor. Then ask yourself if the fellow inmates are "animals" or something far worse.
Yes it does happen to men in prison. Please see the link here: http://news.mywebpal.com/news_tool_v2.cfm?pnpid=680&show=archivedetails&ArchiveID=1231804&om=1
I know the guy it happened to. Sad case....
Rape is rape. It shouldn't matter where it occurs. Rape is a violent crime against an innocent human being. Yes, these prisoners are in most cases guilty of a crime. But, the prisoners themselves have no right to attack one another.
Whenever I have seen a young person on television, hauled away from the courtroom and bound for jail, I always wonder if they will become victims of violence in the penal system.
We know that prisoners join gangs for protection, be it based solely on race, or gang membership. This does not absolve them of crimes committed in jail. But, it does explain some of the violence inside the prison system.
And mothers who see their sons or daughters hauled away... I think they know in their hearts that their children can be victims of violent crime, be it beatings, rape or murder.
In no way do I believe that criminals shouldn't be punished, but I do believe they deserve some basic human rights.
Did you see what happened when Bellick threw Tweener in with Avacado? That wasn't right!
Frankly, doesn't matter if someone is guilty or not...any kind of rape is unacceptable. Prisons need to get this under control, period.
I work as a vendor of correctional IT software/hardware and Inmate Telephone Systems (Before you all screech, these telephones do not cost taxpayers a stinkin' dime, the jails makes commission on calls from us). I work in the jails and in the pods/cellblocks, sometimes no more than an arm's length from even dangerous inmates (even in Washington DC Jail, the most dangerous local jail I've been in).
I have asked CO's from time to time if this is an issue. Some say yes, most say no. It happens, it isn't right and almost every CO and jail admin I know fight hard to eliminate prison rape. The motto is "Care, custody, and Control". Cameras fill even these new local jails that remind me more of Supermaxes than the local (pardon the pun) "pokey". CO's don't loiter behind a pod's desk, they move throughout the pod and the inmates.
I think HRW has a larger agenda, being that the US imprisons too many people for too long.
I would never gloat about prisoner on prisoner rape. It's a crime. It boils my blood that the prison guards and hierarchy look the other way.
Why are prisons places where criminals can continue criminal behavior? Why is sexual abuse in prison a matter of some humor for late night entertainers? Why is that abuse something to be grinned at, rather than ended? If our prisons can't enforce behavior, then there is something very very wrong with them and with the governments that administer them.
What an apalling tale. People go to Gaol "as" punishment for crime, not "for" punishment. The punishment is the removal of most of life's choices for a lengthy period of time. Gang rape by inmates should never be a part of that equation.
Great thread -- thanx for posting!
Exactly. I think specifically of two black men who just recently were exonerated due to DNA evidence that we had not been able to test 15 years ago when they were incarcerated.
While I do believe some people are so beyond evil they deserve whatever they get in prison and more, I also know that the Lord himself tells us to pray for those in prison and, certainly, He wants us to do so because He knew many would be sent there as innocent lambs to the slaughter.
I simply don't understand why they can't have prisons based on crimes so that a DUI inmate wouldn't be in with hardcore people, though, in no way am I excusing DUI.
I agree. Going to prison for a relatively minor offense should not be a death sentence nor a guarantee of unspeakable torture at the hands of thugs. Prison guards should be held accountable for this kind of thing if it happens under their supervision.
That's not all...
This makes an Islamic group look real good when you're inside... for protection.
I wonder how many conversions may have this as a root cause.
