I went to a drive-thru yesterday, and when I got to the window, the girl told me the lady in front of me saw my Marine Corps license plates, and she paid for my stuff.
I didn't get a chance to thank her, she just drove away, and it was just totally out of the blue. That was really cool. I'm still thinking about that. I've been out for 15 years. Wow. You read about stuff like this from time to time, someone seeing someone in uniform and paying their tab, but this actually happened to me, and I thought I'd let y'all know.

Had to show a DD214 and pay $25 extra, but I must admit I'm pretty proud of them.
I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said: No longer lean, No longer mean, but still a marine. I loved it. I would have liked to ask the guy driving the car where he got it. He was probably in his 50s.
Well deserved, I'm sure.
I do that all the time when I visit the USA, usually just buy the guys a beer.
No one noticed a little white car which drove by slowly, obviously looking for an empty space. Man and his wife, two little ones in the back seat. The car was a little on the rough side and it had a Marine bumper sticker on the back.
The car went by and then parked in the lot. The unmistakable figure of a Marine got out and walked up the hill to see if there were any empty tables. There were none and he started, disappointed, back to the car. Suddenly, from one of the tables came a big booming voice, "HEY YOU. MARINE! HERE!" There was complete silence as about 200 startled people looked up and appraised the situation. Then it was near pandemonium with 20 tables being cleared and 20 parties begging him to "take ours, take ours.".
In the end, room was made, no one had to leave, and one Marine family was plied with mountains of steaks, hamburgers, chips, sodas and everything that makes a picnic a picnic. The Marine seemed a bit stunned at first but his kids had a blast and he slipped into the goodwill. Oh, and each of the 20 individual parties walked away with 20 other parties as friends.
Pretty cool.
That was a bold act on her part.......

That is great that they require proof of service. No chance for stolen valor.
They seem to be pickier about that than about whether or not someone's here legally.
Now you've got me crying. What a touching gesture. Heartwarming to say the least.

For Connecticut plates, you need to be a member of the Marine Corps League, sign a paper, and then pay extra
I just got my normal renewal, and I owe Jodi Rell $175!!
If I wanted a plate, I would need to pay that plus the fee for the special plate.
About 15 years ago I picked up a dinner tab for 4 reservists from Texas. They were on their way home and in uniform. I picked up the tab partly because they were reservists but mainly because of their manners. As they came through the door each automatically reached up and removed his cap. Their deportment was impeccable but there was still no question to anyone but that it would be a good idea to be on their side in a fight. I paid their check and slid out a side door. I prefer that appreciation be anonymous and general rather than personal.

A lady from Dallas spoke at some length with a GI who was just back home from Iraq and who was buying and engagement ring for his girl. The guy (a typical Texas gentleman) then told the clerk to wait on the lady first.
When he got ready to pay down on his ring, the lady had already paid for it -- and left the area...
