Tonight's Hannity and Colmes featured an interview with Col. Oliver North about the media coverage of Iraq and the William Arkin slam against our soldiers. During the course of the interview, Alan Colmes claimed that Rep. John Murtha was right when Murtha accused our Marines of killing innocent civilians in Haditha in cold blood. Col. North immediately reminded Colmes that the Marines had yet to face a trial therefore they were innocent until proven guilty. Colmes replied "there were confessions".
Here's my personal transcript of that portion of the interview... Colmes: Murtha turned out to have correct information. Dick Durbin was talking about treatment gitmo specifically. Col North: Alan, let's deal with these one at a time. Colmes: We don't have a lot of time but let's deal with them. Col. North: There is no proof of what Mr. Murtha said because those trials have not taken place yet. And you believe, as i do. Colmes: There have been convictions. Col. North: Innocent until proven guilty. Colmes: There have been confessions
Colmes was grossly mistaken. There have been no confessions from any of the Marines accused in the Haditha incident. There has yet to be a hearing for these Marines ergo no convictions. Like all American citizens, the Marines are innocent until proven guilty.
Colmes owes these Marines an apology and an on-air correction. John Murtha and the media have done their best to convict these Marines in the court of public opinion. Our soldiers deserve so much better than this.
Let's say that PVT Snuffy admits to "battlefield murder" when he was merely a cog in an operational platoon or squad. This confession comes after he's been interrogated by himself in a room with a bare light bulb and a couple of warrant officer CID types browbeating him for about 12 hours, 2 weeks running.
Who cares? He's still a private.
All he's really admitting is that he feels bad about having to kill people. He was relying for correct orders on his NCO or OIC.
Just because a subordinate can be made to feel bad after the fact about a combat engagement and terrorized into admitting wrongdoing in order to save his skin does not mean something wrong took place.
We could probably try all of America and the Enola Gay for cold-blooded murder based on that prescription. The real issue would be if Harry Truman acted responsibly and legally. (He did.)
The NCO in this case acted according to the ROE, so the private's feelings of guilt and his effort to cover himself are irrelevant.

Right. What made Murtha's remarks so despicable was that they represented a rush to judgement, and totally disregarded the legal rights of the men involved. And it was all done for political purposes.
I am curious. The Democrats are quick to call our troops quilty before any trial and yet we were lectured by Howard Dean to withhold judgement on OBL till guilt or innocence is proven?? You wonder why they are losing traditional democrats such as my self and parents???
That is about the first time I've seen Ollie get visibly angry. Maybe Alan couldn't see it, but I was surprised Ollie didn't swing at him.
In the leaked NCIS report, I appreciated the strength conveyed in the statement of Haditha Marine, Lance Cpl. Jack B. Tatum:
"Knowing what I know now, I feel badly about killing Iraqi civilians who may have been innocent, but I stand fast in my decisions that day, as I reacted to the threats that I perceived at the time," Tatum said. "I did not shoot randomly with the intent to harm innocent Iraqi civilians."

Showing my ignorance, here. What's a gitwort? Looked it up online but couldn't find it. My fave is brimborion - but I can't find a definition of that word online, either. Here's a few good adjectives: obnoxious, egregious, insufferable, and stinky. And a few nouns: tomfool, nimrod, ignoramus, and schmuck. Happy emailing!
