About 40 Israeli volunteers have been fighting alongside the Serbs as a gesture of gratitude for Serb support for Yugoslav Jews against the Nazis in the Second World War.
The existence of the Israeli fighters - they do not like the term mercenaries - was revealed by Ron Ben Yishai, an Israeli war correspondent who was injured by Kosovo Liberation Army sniper fire this week while reporting from the province for the Tel Aviv daily Yediot Aharonot.
The paper said that all the Israeli fighters had emigrated to the Jewish state from the former Soviet Union and were part of a volunteer unit, the majority of whose members were Russians.
Mr Ben Yishai quoted one of the Israeli volunteers, named only as Valery, who recently returned home after fighting in Kosovo for a month, as saying: "We decided to fight alongside the Serbs as a token of our gratitude for the assistance the Serbs extended to the Jews of Yugoslavia who were persecuted by the Nazis in World War Two."
The Israeli fighter said that another reason that he had joined up was "identification with the Christian Slavs' fight against the Muslims trying to take over Europe".
Diplomatic observers noted that, at an earlier stage of the Yugoslav crisis, many Islamic volunteers - including former members of the Afghan Mujahidin rebels who had fought against the Soviet forces - fought alongside the Bosnian Muslims.

I was part of Clinton's grand Albanian adventure and, at the time, I didn't care, I followed orders. I would have happily killed Serbs. In fact, I am fairly certain I did so, although it is hard to know sometimes.
That said, it was badly run from the top, and so we were largely ineffective.
And I am rather happy about that now.
And rather angry at Clinton.

JERUSALEM, June 10 (AFP) - About 40 Israeli men have been fighting alongside Serb forces against ethnic Albanians in Kosova, the Yediot Aharonot newspaper reported on Thursday. The Israeli volunteers, all recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union and ex-soldiers in the Red Army, fought primarily in mixed Russian-Serb units of the Yugoslav security forces, it said.
The newspaper's military correspondant, Ron Ben Yishai, said he encountered some of the Israeli volunteers during a trip this week to Kosova. He said the Israelis, some Jews but also non-Jews who married Jewish women and obtained Israeli citizenship, included veterans of fighting in Afghanistan and Chechnya.

Bob's Note: Thank God the Russian Ukranians, Greeks, and the Israelis still remember that their friends are Christians and their enemies are Moslems. Mossad was especially active and concluded a deal with the Bosnian Serbs at Pale involving a substantial supply of artillery shells and mortar bombs. In return they secured safe passage for the Jewish population out of the besieged town of Sarajevo. Subsequently, the remaining population was perplexed to find that unexploded mortar bombs landing in Sarajevo sometimes had Hebrew markings.
