(Vanity) Do your school close on account of cold?
Posted on 02/05/2007 5:14:52 AM PST by yankeedame
I'm here in the Dayton, OH area. We are going through a blast of "dangerous" cold. Today 8 degree expected high, with wind chill of -10 to -15. Otherwise sunny.
I've got the radio on and I'm stunned the number of school closings! (Not to mention the slightly smaller number of "2 hour delays".)
Do you folks have this no-school-today-because-its-too-cold?

I have a question do you think the closures might be to cut down on fuel use and costs?

I lived in Helena, MT for 5 years. To my knowledge, schools only closed early once for weather in that time. Lows got down to -41.

You're talking about government employees. If it looks like rain, they may decide to close the schools.
By the way, you need an "S" after SCHOOL in your headline.
Do your schoolS close on account of cold?

When I was a kid growing up in Kansas, we went to school in all types of weather, except tornados and blizzards.
10 miles up hill to school and 10 miles up hill back home.

I was here in Florida when it snowed. Not only did schools stay open we had to dress out for PE.

Somewhere, Al Gore is ignoring us. He's probably on the beach at Aruba. But he's not enjoying it because it's warm and the ocean is lapping around his feet.

Hey, here in South Carolina we close 'em for a heavy frost.
Not to mention raid the grocery stores for milk and every loaf of bread.

-18 air temp right now and -32 windchill. School is open and on schedule.
We're tough in the rural areas. I noticed the Cesar Chavez Academy and Peace Community School are closed in Minneapolis/St. Paul. PC weenies! LOL So predictable.

In the beginning of January, they closed the Louisville, KY and southern Indiana schools because they PREDICTED snow (We never got any).

When I was a kid growing up in Kansas, we went to school in all types of weather, except tornados and blizzards....10 miles up hill to school and 10 miles up hill back home. Kansas... Hill? Yeah, right!
My dad always used to tell us about the hill next to his house in Topeka when he was a kid. How they used to sled down it and roll down it in the summertime. We went to look at the old farm, and the house was on land about as flat as a billiard table. We asked him where the hill was, and he says "What are you talking about, IT'S RIGHT THERE!!!"

I don't exactly get their logic. At 6am it is 2 below, by 8am it is still 2 below. What does a delay accomplish exactly? I mean it's always dark at 6 regardless of the temps so...
Just wondering.

I am amazed at how quickly they close schools now a/c weather.
As a boy I trudged thru snow sometimes up to my knees to get to St. Joseph's.

I think in NYS there is actually some law (there's a law for everything here) that says if it's below a certain wind chill/temp the public schools must close. Not sure what that temp is though, seems like 20 but I think it's more closely correlated with the Wind chill since the kids have to stand out waiting for the bus.
When it comes to snow, we need like 2+ ft to get any real closures. This is Western New York after all, we're used to some snow :-)
