The Ugly American (John Kerry)
RealClearPolitics ^ | Februrary 1, 2007 | Victor Davis Hanson

Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic candidate for president, is at it again with another rude gaffe, this one providing an unintended glimpse of the way many contemporary cosmopolitan elites characterize their homeland when abroad.

In the past, Kerry has said that our soldiers were "terrorizing" Iraqi civilians in their homes. He has also warned that uneducated Americans "get stuck in Iraq" -- a supposedly botched joke. Now, he assures an audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the United States is a "sort of international pariah."

Kerry, who appeared on stage in Davos this past weekend with former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, also proclaimed, "When we walk away from global warming, Kyoto, when we are irresponsibly slow in moving toward AIDS in Africa, when we don't advance and live up to our own rhetoric and standards, we set a terrible message of duplicity and hypocrisy."

Kerry could learn a few simple rules of etiquette that should guide the "message" of all high American officials when abroad:

Tell the Whole Truth Without Posturing or Spinning

Kerry was clearly directing his criticism at the Bush administration, but the Kyoto Protocol, the international climate treaty, was first rejected by the U.S. in 1997. Ten years ago, President Clinton wisely chose not to refer the treaty to the Senate. Even that was not enough for outraged senators, who went ahead anyway to vote 95-0 to oppose any international agreement on climate control like Kyoto in which China, India and other developing countries would remain exempt. Kerry himself cast one of these votes -- an ironic example of what Kerry now calls "duplicity and hypocrisy."

The most appalling part of all this is the number of people in this country who actually voted for him for President! He's an international embarrassment.

"The Kyoto Treaty was flawed. I was in Kyoto and I was part of that. ... "[The Kyoto agreement] doesn't ask enough of developing nations, the nations that are going to be producing much greater emissions and which we need to get on the right course now through technology transfer."
-John Kerry - THEN

""When we walk away from global warming, Kyoto ...we set a terrible message of duplicity and hypocrisy."
John Kerry - Now

Well, if there is anyone who ought to know about duplicity and hypocrisy...

VDH, why waste ink on Kerry? Really.

I know what you mean, the man is hardly worth the ink it will take to write his obituary. Yet we know that the left, possessed as it is with virtual control of the establishment media, has ink enough to refloat his reputation. Indeed, it is the left that generally writes the history and the Arthur Schlesingers of the world always write it with one eye on the future. We have already seen how our truly courageous Swift Boat Veterans have been denigrated until it has become commonly accepted that John Kerry was "Swift Boated" by a scurrilous band of hacks determined to destroy the reputation of an authentic hero to serve Republican ambitions.

Churchill once said "I am confident that history will be kind to me because I am going to write it"-or words to that effect. If we let the Libs write history it will not be kind to us.

It is not enough that these vampires be killed, they must have a stake driven through their hearts.

So it was a 95-0 Senate vote against the Kyoto treaty. Seems to me that Kerry has only two ways to spin this. Either he comes clean and admits he was one of the 95 voting against, or he was the "Zero" that voted for it.

Do you really like Teddy Roosevelt? A lot of people here seem to. I can't imagine why. I studied him a few years back and came away hating his guts.

That was one fine post.

There is another alternative. John Kerry has two (at a minimum) minds. He even told us so when he said he was for one bill before he was against it. We may logically conclude he is both for and against Kyoto.

I have no words to describe how extremely glad I am he is not creating international incidents three times a day as the president of my country.

Has anyone noticed the last name initials of the similarly bad Democrat choices for president starting with K enedy, Johnson, Humphrey, McGovern, Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Cinton, Kerry, Possibly Clinton again. The worst one all have either K or C as their surname initial.
