(Duncan) Hunter To Discuss New Era Of Military Competition

Here's the video that accompanies the online story:

Presidential candidate Duncan Hunter will hold a press conference in Washington Wednesday to discuss China's recent anti-satellite missile test.

According to a report, the Chinese military destroyed an aging weather satellite that was orbiting more than 500 miles in space. Hunter said that China's test "represents the commencement of a new era of military competition in space."

The San Diego congressman also said this country's war-fighting capability relies heavily on U.S. space assets, and we must take steps to "ensure our forces cannot be targeted through an adversarial space strike."

Hunter sounds great except that he's a no-name Congressman who won't be able to raise enough money OR win his own state. Newt's name obviously isn't nothing to conservatives..have you seen the latest FR poll? Newt hasn't even announced and he's polling well (in key states, not just on FR). Yes, he has some "baggage" with his personal life - but the GOP frontrunners all do too. The difference is that Newt is a proven conservative and has proven he is a leader. He also understands the political game better than anyone on our side. Newt is extremely articulate and great at framing the issues for the American people. He would give Hillary hell in a debate. Look, I think Hunter sounds like a great guy but he's not ready for a presidential race yet.

I like them both, and would be pleased as punch with a Gingrich/Hunter ticket. I'm afraid about Newt waiting so long to declare, however. And Hunter is no slouch either - Vietnam vet serving in 25 dangerous helicopter missions in the 173rd Airborne, proven experience, built the fence in his own district, a true heir to the Reagan revolution.

...meanwhile, Rudy's expertise on Chinese missile testing extends to bottle rockets being lit off in Chinatown on New Year's Eve.

Newt's - should he run - won't win California either.

Well, it's about time for the "Duncan Hunter supporters are delusional" crowd to show up...

Thanks for the invite! Could you please provide any tangible evidence (outside of his legions of FR devotees) that Duncan Hunter has any chance at all of getting the GOP nomination? You know, polls, fund raising, endorsements, positive media coverage, odds, that sort of stuff. You see if you aren't delusional, you should be able to demonstrate his viability with facts and evidence, don't you think?

Newt undoubtedly has pull with conservatives but my point is that he is dead in a general election and I'd rather put up a candidate that is dynamite in getting the conservative message out there AND can back it up with personal story. Newt had his chance with national politics and though he's known, it's not good. And that personal factor does not play well outside conservative circles and will bring sarcasm of the hypocrite charge and no chance in getting people to take a look. I still say Hunter would play well with people and military experience can play a BIG role in the election with the continued war and threats we are facing.

Agree/Disagree.

What hurt Newt was his disappearance from the spotlight to get work done, much like Bush. He let his enemies define him, trying to get a Conservative agenda passed - and mostly succeeding.

When Newt was making a case for himself, he enjoyed high approval ratings for ANY Republican. When he was out daily, selling himself and the Contract With America, he was smashingly successful, and very likable. Being Speaker took away from the time he once spent selling Conservative ideas, which he does best.

So I think he would be very electable, as he could once again devote himself full-time to selling himself and Conservative ideas, a duty in which he always comes across very well to the public. And nobody gets to talk about any Republican's past problems when Hillary is on the ticket; it's a wash at worst.

That being said, I do wish Hunter the best in his campaign. He is probably the most Conservative candidate and I like him a lot. However, if he fails to gain ground by Labor Day, and Newt throws his hat in the ring and becomes an instant contender - and an alternative to the three headed monster - then I'm all on board the Newt train.

I hope Duncan makes his case very quickly. ;-)

No GOP candidate will. That isn't the point. We need our nominee to be able to carry his own state, whatever that state may be.

Reaganesque Presidential-sounding quote from Hunter (responding to assertions that the Republican presidential nominee needs to raise $100 million):

Hunter said he wouldn't need to raise that kind of money because “most of that money goes to pay for consultants that help them look like they are conservative, and I am conservative already."

Duncan Hunter----was a conservative---is a conservative---will always be a conservative.

I assume Duncan Hunter is cleared of any involvement related to the Cunningham affair. I can't see him running for President if there was the remotest chance he would be implicated.
