AUSTIN - Nationally syndicated columnist Molly Ivins has been hospitalized in her recurring battle with breast cancer.
"I think she's tough as a metal boot," her brother, Andy Ivins, said Friday after a visit with her at Seton Medical Center in Austin.
Andy Ivins said his sister was admitted to Seton on Thursday. She spent Friday morning with longtime colleagues and friends, and was "sleeping peacefully" when he arrived later in the day.
A self-described leftist agitator, Ivins, 62, completed a round of radiation treatment in August, but the cancer "came back with a vengeance," and has spread through her body, Andy Ivins said.
Ivins' columns, which she infuses with passion and wit, appear in more than 300 newspapers around the country. She's written six books, four of which were best sellers.
They included Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush, Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America, which she wrote with longtime friend Lou Dubose; and Who Let the Dogs In? Incredible Political Animals I Have Known.
Ivins was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. A year later, she described her treatment with characteristic wit: "First they poison you; then they mutilate you; then they burn you. I've had more fun."
She received her third diagnosis a year ago; despite her illness, she's managed to crank out her columns.
In a piece earlier this month, she wrote that she was starting a newspaper crusade to end the war in Iraq.
"Raise hell," she urged readers. "Think of something ridiculous to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. ... We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!' "
Ivins was an aesthetic terrorist... just out of commission for the moment...
Aesthetic terrorism. Tokyo Rose...
Amen, I hope she does goes quickly, without pain.
A friend went through this, the cancer traveled to the brain destroying the parts that sensed pain, it was a blessing.
I was no fan, God bless her.
I don't know know why this happened to her but I'll bet Karl Rove was behind it. Just ask the folks over at DU.
I would think it is evident to a reasonable person that a career political critic is different than a murderer, rapist, etc. Don't you?
To quote one of Molly's heroes, "It depends on what your definition of "is" is....."
Ivins' Rally Call For Abortion
She calls abortion a life or death decision....for women, not the child. Would you say her complicity in this practice qualifies her?
You can't keep a secret can you, I told you to keep your mouth shut, now Dan Rather is going to show everyone the memo.
"If wishy-washer (sic) middle of the roaders, means being a decent and Christian person, call me what you like."
I'm NOT a decent and Christian person. Unlike the squishy middle, I take the game of politics VERY, VERY seriously.
It would not bother me in the least if every single Democrat in America were suddenly to go POOF and disappear.
We are better than them, you know. Perhaps we could have the grace to act like it.
OOPS!
I'm no Ivins fan, but I know from experience that cancer is a terrible thing to deal with. Here's hoping for remission - and that Ivins finally sees the light. Although I'm less optimistic about her seeing the light.
May God bless her with a speedy, painless, and complete recovery.
BUMP
Ditto.
LOL! You don't mess around, do you?
Actually, as far as Ivins is concerned, and I say this with no malice...but I couldn't care less if she lives or dies. I avoid her column like the plague - because it's so nasty and negative and condescending - so to me, she really doesn't exist anyway.
Even so, I don't wish suffering upon her. But maybe a little "poof" is in order. :^)
I agree. I hope she experiences a complete cure from the disease and from people who wish her ill but I repeated myself. Those who wish for someone to suffer from cancer are a cancer.
No amount of ill will towards her. Her time on this earth will end and like all of us, she will meet her maker and stand alone. He will decide her fate, not us. Until then, I wish her only peace.
And every bit as attractive ...
That's accurately written.
