WASHINGTON - Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback said Thursday he would not support a resolution drafted by Democrats opposing President Bush's Iraq plan, but he could back a rival proposal that contains less partisan language.
Brownback, among the first Republican lawmakers to publicly break with the president over a troop increase in Iraq, said the resolution approved this week by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is too divisive.
"I think what we ought to be discussing now as these resolutions move forward is what we should support, not what we're opposed to, and what we can pull together on, not what we're divided on," Brownback said during a conference call with reporters.

The majority of the US Seante is acting like they are members of the City Council of Ithaca, NY or Bezerkely, CA or some other liberal urban hellhole.
At least when Ithaca passes a toothless antiwar resolution, it's understandable -- they are powerless freaks who have no real power.
But United States Senators acting like this? Placing President Bush on double-secret probation over a WAR????? Playing childish political games when we have troops serving and dying?
And did you hear that senile idiot SHEETS declare that he didn't understand how we forgot Vietnam when we blundered into the war? Didn't the distinguished gentleman VOTE to support going to war? Isn't he admitting he was clueless in 2003?
COWARDS!!
If we conclude nothing else from this, the recent wobbly stand on the War on Terror by Brownback demonstrates poor political judgment by a candidate entering the Republican Primaries. The Democrats can easily outmaneuver Brownback in a tough campaign in the general election if this is a representative example of his political IQ.

It would have been suicide if Brownback had voted with the Dems. As it is, he's in a state of semi-suicide. Nobody who was looking will trust him again, and he's lost any small chance he had for the presidency, but at least if he keeps his nose to the grindstone he might get re-elected to the Senate again.
Okay, we all know the real reason why Brownback changed his mind, but let's look at it in a positive light. At least he did the right thing by not supporting the resolution.
Brownback has been proven unprincipaled and indecisive.
Another way of saying Brownback is dead meat.

He gets that credit for now but if he's really smart he'll stay away from any resolution that is intended to "send a message".

I'm afraid you might be being to optimistic about Brownback.
I heard that he wanted the Warner (Repub) resolution that says they disagree with the President adding more troops and want him to "pursue all options and alternatives to reach the strategic goals ...".
NO I'M NOT KIDDING!
Somehow, they think that is a way to join the cut and run bandwagon and not call it that. Of course the enemy will understand and read the fine print too .....

I heard that some of the Republican Senator had not signed onto the Dem or Warner resolutions because they were waiting to see if the threat of such resolutions would cause the President to "compromise".
YES - Compromise on a battle plan.
