God bless you, President Bush ... millions of us hold you in prayer and in the greatest respect and gratitude.
Thanks for posting the live thread tonight.
The funniest thing was the applause lines. Once they put the camera on Rahm Emanual and Steny Hoyer. They looked at each other, Steny mouthed "Do we get up?" Rahm paused like he was having to think about it. Then he nods his head yes, and they both stood up. The camera goes back to the podium and Pelosi is starting to stand up. It was obvious who the DemocRATs were taking their cues from - and it wasn't Pelosi. Bunch of phonies. LOL!!
No wonder Webb didn't last as Sec. of Navy. On whose side is he?
Who is this Webb? He's about as dry as a popcorn fart. He could put an insomniac to sleep before he completes a sentence.
Webb, "the majority of the people and of our military is against the war"
First, it's not about the people supporting the war or not it's about our security
Second, where the h3ll does he get the goll to claim that he knows what the military believes, re-enlistment rates and voting records show just the opposite of what he said. It is a blatant lie and he needs to be driven into the deck for such a reckless remark.
This could have been the entire speech...says it all.
At this point, the Republicans stood and applauded (even Warner), but most of the Democrats continued to sit.
Was a good speech could have been way stronger and tougher but hey i guess we have the new tone
I've been perusing a few left wing sites. Those dummies thank that Bush's call for to increase enlisted men and women means the creation of a draft. A draft could proove useful in that dems might learn to fight for something besides retreat and surrender.
Boy, I feel safe now.
And we need to resolve the status of the illegal immigrants who are already in our country without animosity and without amnesty.
You can resolve their status by removing them from the country.
Convictions run deep in this Capitol when it comes to immigration. Let us have a serious, civil, and conclusive debate so that you can pass, and I can sign, comprehensive immigration reform into law.
Yep, amnesty.
With this pathetic speech tonight, the President has shown his true colors. He is an appeaser who doesn't have a conservative bone in his body.
It's over - the terrorists have won.
It isn't like us, the people, but it is like the 'Rats, ask any South Vietnamese, especially the mountain people, but also the Vietnamese who were our friends. They were abandoned. The father of a coworker spent years in a "reeducation" camp, and he was one of the lucky ones. And it was the 'Rats in Congress, cheered on what we can call the "Cut and Run media, when there was a Republican President. If they can pull it off again, they will.
What an inspiring speeach by a great man, a great president, and most of all a great Christian. We are lucky to have this man as our leader!
God Bless Our President.
Now that was a damn good speech!!! Thank you for posting the transcript, Starwise :)
I missed the whole thing.
All I caught was a bit on the evening news. Both channels I switched to were showing the Democrat's response.
Both stations were showing the same clip.
The part that I saw was probably the most immature response that I have ever seen from the Democrats.
...Congress thinks the President's plan is wrong... the troops think the plan is wrong...
What was that drivel about?
I kept waiting to hear Webb say "... and your Mom thinks your wrong, and you Dad thinks your wrong... In fact, everybody thinks your wrong...."
I was waiting to see Webb stick his tongue out at the President.
Seriously, the smidge that I caught was very immature.
Just a bump for keeping the dialog going!
Looks like a lot of us 50 somethings might get a chance to go. I am thinking of stepping up. Anyone with me?
Next, there is the matter of earmarks. These special interest items are often slipped into bills at the last hour when not even C-SPAN is watching. In 2005 alone, the number of earmarks grew to over 13,000 and totaled nearly $18 billion. Even worse, over 90 percent of earmarks never make it to the floor of the House and Senate they are dropped into Committee reports that are not even part of the bill that arrives on my desk. You did not vote them into law. I did not sign them into law. Yet they are treated as if they have the force of law. The time has come to end this practice. So let us work together to reform the budget process ... expose every earmark to the light of day and to a vote in Congress and cut the number and cost of earmarks at least in half by the end of this session.
If Congress doesn't vote earmarks into law, and if the President doesn't sign earmarks into law why do they have the force of law?
The cynic in me is growing stronger as I think that this President, who I want to love as much as I loathed the last one, has vetoed only one bill. The IRS isn't practicing when it takes $18 billion in taxes to fund this. And the Congress critters who take these bribes only half-heartedly applauded this when the President brought it up. Does the devil make them do it? If the President is serious why didn't he publicly call for the Line Item Veto? The democrats can't hate him any more than they already do. What's the cost? Or is he not serious and this is just a throw away line to dupe rubes like me? Why bring it up? The 2005 earmarks he referenced happened under Republican control of the House and Senate and the Dems largely ran their campaign on it and were able to regain control largely because of it. If earmarks are bad why only cut them by half?
HELP! Please explain the strategery in this one to me.
Regards,
TS
Unfortunately I wasn't able to be on this live thread while the SOTU speech was being made but am enjoying revisiting the commentary. I'm very proud of Bush's speech and he came across well. Contrary to what people here may think, civility does not mean weakness. I agreed with nearly everything he said and enjoyed it very much.
Also, I'm not one to criticize on stupid stuff like appearance. Still, why was Pelosi blinking so much? At least one blink a second practically the entire speech. Yes, I have contacts. But I'd only have to do that if I had a splinter in my eye or something really serious. It really was distracting.
