Why Are There So Many Single Americans?
New York Times ^ | 21 January 2007 | Kate Zernike

THE news that 51 percent of all women live without a spouse might be enough to make you invest in cat futures.

But consider, too, the flip side: about half of all men find themselves in the same situation. As the number of people marrying has dropped off in the last 45 years, the marriage rate has declined equally for men and for women.

The stereotype has been cemented in the popular culture: the hard-charging career girl who gets her comeuppance, either violently or dying a slow death by late-night memo and Chinese takeout...

But when it comes to marriage, the two Americas aren’t divided by gender. And it’s not the career girls on the losing end. It’s their less educated manicurists or housekeepers, women who might arguably be less able to live on their own.

The emerging gulf is instead one of class — what demographers, sociologists and those who study the often depressing statistics about the wedded state call a “marriage gap” between the well-off and the less so.

Statistics show that college educated women are more likely to marry than non-college educated women — although they marry, on average, two years later.

Women with more education also are becoming less likely to divorce, or inclined to divorce, than those with less education. They are even less likely to be widowed all in all, less likely to end up alone.

I'm with you. I can cook, keep house, wash clothes and entertain myself better than any woman I've ever met!

Yes, and also includes women who are married, but whose spouses are not living with them at this moment -- for example, if their husband is off doing military duty.

Why buy the cow, when you can get the milk for free?

Oh really? LOL. I didn't realize it was my duty to marry.

It is your duty to BE. It is your privilege to become more self-aware.

you are right, the situation you describe has happened to my cousin. It seems to me that your rights to your children should not be circumscribed by divorce. Joint custody should be the rule.

Why would you post that? Just to upset people who like cats? I hope the dogs that kill cats choke to death.

Work on you. A successful relationship is an inside job. You will attract what you become.

Gospel truth...but an opinion highly unpopular in the US these days, where one's unhappiness is clearly somebody else's fault. ;)

And what does this mean for us guys who would actually LIKE TO get married??

IMHO, it means that you had better wait and be DAMN sure that the one you decide to marry is the right one. Though you will never know for sure if it is, take every precaution that you can that person will be as dedicated as you. I wasn't sure until I lost my job and was unemployed for a year, she stuck by me and supported me while we were dating. I got back on my feet, married her, and will forever do my best to give her the world.

If the bolded phrase involves a beach towel, a web site, and Crisco, I simply don't want to know.

People are single nowadays because they were raised in a culture of narcissism. Marraige requires responsibility and sacrifice.....two concepts that are anathema to modern culture.

This story was debunked by Micahel Medved over the weekend.

They used girls 15-19 in their statistics as unmarried. Over 10,000,000 females fit into that catagory.

Because young men don't have to get married to have sex regularly any more.

Also, divorce laws favor women, and young men can find themselves handing over a substantial portion of their paychecks for 18 years in exchange for very little contact with their children.

Why bother?

It doesn't but your humor is amusing.
I have a Cairn Terrier that pretty much runs the house; life here centers around whatever he's doing.
