Why Are There So Many Single Americans?
New York Times ^ | 21 January 2007 | Kate Zernike

Posted on 01/23/2007 7:11:06 AM PST by shrinkermd

THE news that 51 percent of all women live without a spouse might be enough to make you invest in cat futures.

But consider, too, the flip side: about half of all men find themselves in the same situation. As the number of people marrying has dropped off in the last 45 years, the marriage rate has declined equally for men and for women.

The stereotype has been cemented in the popular culture: the hard-charging career girl who gets her comeuppance, either violently or dying a slow death by late-night memo and Chinese takeout...

But when it comes to marriage, the two Americas aren’t divided by gender. And it’s not the career girls on the losing end. It’s their less educated manicurists or housekeepers, women who might arguably be less able to live on their own.

The emerging gulf is instead one of class — what demographers, sociologists and those who study the often depressing statistics about the wedded state call a “marriage gap” between the well-off and the less so.

Statistics show that college educated women are more likely to marry than non-college educated women — although they marry, on average, two years later.

Women with more education also are becoming less likely to divorce, or inclined to divorce, than those with less education. They are even less likely to be widowed all in all, less likely to end up alone.

Norman Rockwell, Ozzie, Harriet, marriage et al are NOT coming back from the dead.

Get over it you Luddites.

It's NOT about the chillrun anymore there are enough people on this planet to insure survival of the species until we turn into biomechanical drones born in factories.

Yeah. Here in California we have an initiative process. We can get any law we want on the ballot, and vote it in by overwhelming majorities, only to have the courts throw it out.

He also forbids "unequal yoking". So what should a single person do, marry someone unsuitable just for the sake of marriage, or remain unmarried?

There are plenty of unmaried people who would like to marry but can't find a Godly spouse to share their lives with. That doesn't make them sinners!

Excellent points. I read a scholarly article some years ago that tried to analyze historical factors that caused high or low birthrates. The upshot was that no discernible pattern was apparent. Why was there such a baby boom in the USA and Europe after WWII?
You are right about the economics being a factor. When agriculture dominated the economy of most countries and most people worked on the land, large families were a plus.
Of course the rise of abortion, birth control and other cultural changes have likely affected our birthrate. I wonder what it would take to change that?

You might try looking at church. I find that the most grounded women i meet are at church. Sadly almost all of them are taken :(.

A good percentage of the women i deal with outside of church are exactly like you describe. It stinks out here in california. Once good girls i knew have been completely morphed by this california lifestyle. Even the transplants too. It really is sad.

Either all these single people are the same sex or they're not meeting one another. If the church or denomination you belong to isn't producing the kind of spouse you want, you may have to make some changes.

Of course, but there is no shortage of people.

Just getting to be a shortage of people that hold Western ideals.

They were always in the minority. Since the American Industrial Revolution it has been so in America, too.

I'm not speaking about myself - I'm happily married for all of five months now. But I didn't find my husband in church, I usually attended small congregations of less than 200 people and the other things I was looking for in a spouse made finding one tricky.

But I found a Godly, conservative, homeschooled, geeky engineer with complimentary interests here on FreeRepublic. A lot of people aren't so lucky. Are churches just supposed to match up their single folks? "Here, you're assigned Tammy and you get Doug". There's more to a compatible spouse than just the same church.

Of course. Religious compatibility is important but there's a lot more to it. Your post referred to people looking for a Godly spouse, so the church seemed to be the easiest place to begin narrowing your search.

10 COMMANDMENTS OF MARRIAGE !!!!

Commandment 1
Marriages are made in heaven. But so are thunder and lightning.
Commandment 2
If you want your wife to listen and pay strict attention to every word
you say; talk in your sleep.
Commandment 3
Marriage is grand — and divorce is at least 100 grand!
Commandment 4
Married life is very frustrating. In the first year of marriage, the man
speaks and the woman listens. In the second year, the woman speaks and
the man listens. In the third year, they both speak and the neighbours
listen.
Commandment 5
When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you can be sure of
one thing: Either the car is new or the wife is.
Commandment 6
Marriage is when a man and woman become as one. The trouble starts when
they try to decide which one.
Commandment 7
Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something
you say. After marriage, he will fall asleep before you finish.
Commandment 8
Every man wants a wife who is beautiful, understanding, economical, and
a good cook. But the law allows only one wife.
Commandment 9
Marriage and love are purely matter of chemistry. That is why wives
treat husbands like toxic waste.
Commandment 10
A man is incomplete until he is married. After that, he is finished.

NYT drivel using their previously discredited article.

They are bootstraping a fake article trying to wash it with subsequent articles.

The fact is there are more unmarried women because they are feminists in attitude and feminsits are just not worth the effort. Feminists are for recreational sex, not for marriage. (at least the non-physically ugly ones) [flame suit on]

I find it VERY interesting the NYT is pushing the marriage is eeeeevil agenda after their homosexual dominated staff went all hissy fit for homosexual based marriage.

This is just a warm up, I think they are going for a Martha Burke style end game scenario.

I have a friend who says a woman will spend 10 times as much time planning her divorce than her marriage.

what if you pas a law that ended the courts exclusive right
to rule. For example a 2/3rds majority in the house and senate
required to overturn a voter approved and enacted law. Also would add condition to remove judge for over stepping bounds
with simple majority of house vote.

People are single nowadays because they were raised in a culture of narcissism. Marraige requires responsibility and sacrifice.....two concepts that are anathema to modern culture.

Not only that, but, marriage and being parents of children requires responsibility and sacrifice. I'd go as far as to say that even some married folks capable of being good parents choose not to have kids because they don't want to raise kids in a narcissistic culture...I can't say I blame them.
