Your points are right on!
I should have said, "If he made such remarks".
I agree with his sentiments 100%. Talk about self-fulfilling prophesies!
No - having injected himself into the discussion in such an inflammatory manner -- whatever the merits of his arguments -- he invited this kind of scrutiny into his on familial background.
Especially since it was:
a) Perfectly legal
b) Unremarkable
c) Socially acceptable
d) And found among whites, blacks, and red Indians.
Doesn't the Good Book say something about a person pointing out a mote in someone's eye while ignoring the beam in his own?
In the agrarian south, free people of color needed farm labor to succeed, just as surely as anyone else did. I'm amazed that anyone finds it controversial. There were bound Europeans and bound Native Americans, and there were European and Native Americans to whom they were bound, well before the African slave trade really got going in the late eighteenth century. There were African-descended people in the colonies, who were never bound, who had bound servants. Orphans were routinely bound out until the age of majority. Nobody is taught what actually occurred anymore.
And here I thought Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) was a celebration of the day the slaves of Texas found out the Civil War was over and they were free. What the heck do I know...
"Injected himself"?????? He's a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He's doing his job.
Didn't see if this had been posted yet:

It would be a good idea if Virgina's sons drop old Olympia a line and tell her race baiting isn't a good trait even for a carpetbagger.
And the fact that the editors of this rag would even publish this is beyond the pale.
Report immediatly to the National Center for Past Sins and take your punishment like a man.
This article written by Olympia Stallsmith.
Could Stephanie be Olympia's sister (or perhaps sister-in-law) -- or may her daughter? There's GOT to be a connection (you know, same last name and all!):

Don't miss this page. It is a hoot!
"Jews killed Jesus" is not a stereotype. He did not "perpetuate a stereotype".
It is in fact true that the leaders of the occupied Jewish state charged Jesus with crimes, and requested that the Roman occupation find him guilty of treason and put him to death.
The Romans actually put him to death.
Nobody today should be "held guilty" for putting Jesus to death, as he gave his life willingly and for God's purpose.
All of us are guilty of Jesus' death, because his death was a required payment for the sins of all of us.
Hargrove was completely correct that asking the current citizens of Virginia to apologize for slavery, which ended long before we were born, is like asking the Jews living today to apologize for the acts of their ancesters from 2000 years ago.
He did not say Jews killed Jesus, or that we should punish them for it. He said we should NOT hold Jews today responsible for the death of Jesus, and we should not hold citizens of Virginia responsible for slavery.
And without responsibility, there can be no apology. Otherwise we'd all be apologizing for Saddam's torture chambers, since we all certainly are "sorry" he killed his people.
I would never tell someone to "get over" slavery. I would tell them not to expect an apology from me, or my state, for something that wasn't done but me, and wasn't done to them.
I would tell them their lives would be better if they stopped living in the past and instead looked to how to make their future better. But it is there choice whether to take that advice. If Hargrove had said "blacks should stop looking to the past, and instead focus on how they can make the future better", that would have been a stronger statement than "get over it".
Unfortunately, Hargrove is quite old, and unlikely to word things eloquently. Old people sometimes simply blurt out whatever is on their minds.
Aye, there's the rub. Because the reporters of this country by and large are incapable of performing any whisp of analytical thinking, prefering instead to regurgitate leftist dogma, we have this kind of hysterical response to the use of logic. Would that these reporters focus on the real issue, instead of genereating a false issue out of whole cloth....perish the thought!!
I come from a long line of lunatics...therefore, I must be a...Democrat!?!?!?
And my great-grandfather ran bootleg liquor between Beirut and Damascus under the guise of selling clay pots and jars.
Next?
Ok, forget ancestors.
How many DEMOCRATS owned slaves themselves?
Now, how many REPUBLICANS owned slaves themselves?
If you don't know at least the relative magnitude of the answers, you don't know history.
This 157 year number doesn't jive.
I had my daughter in my mid-20's. I have a picture taken with my daughter, myself, my mother (daughter's grand mother), and my grandmother (daughter's great grandmother) and we're talking an age range from 1-1/2 years old to 71 years old. A spread of what? 68 years or so?
A spread 157 would make this guy's slave owning ancestor something like his g-g-g-g-g-great grandfather or so?? And that fact that this 20 year old man owned a 60 year old female slaves tell me that:
1)He inherited this slave
2)That she was his "black mammy" who raised him and he did not wish to turn her out into the cold in her old age; OR, that she was such that he couldn't get rid of her, try as he might -- too old, too ill, too sour a disposition, who knows?
3) He had only one slave? And such an old one* to boot. Whether he worked in the town or country that doesn't reflex very good on him -- economically speaking!
====================
*We're talking mid-1800 here, where sixty was o-l-d.
Saying Jews killed Jesus, who was himself a Jew, in any context, is perpetuating a stereotype, whether it was intended or not. He's too blunt for his own good. As you say, that happens sometimes with the old folk.
who knows
I actually am directly descended from Irish royalty. SO CALL ME QUEEN DLEECOMEBACK07.
hmmmm.... this sounds fair: investigate aLL OTHER members of congress to see whose relatives once owned slaves.
My grandfather was an alcoholic... am I responsible for his drinking (I never even met him - he died before I was born)
