"Jews killed Jesus" is not a stereotype. He did not "perpetuate a stereotype".

It is in fact true that the leaders of the occupied Jewish state charged Jesus with crimes, and requested that the Roman occupation find him guilty of treason and put him to death.

The Romans actually put him to death.

Nobody today should be "held guilty" for putting Jesus to death, as he gave his life willingly and for God's purpose.

All of us are guilty of Jesus' death, because his death was a required payment for the sins of all of us.

Hargrove was completely correct that asking the current citizens of Virginia to apologize for slavery, which ended long before we were born, is like asking the Jews living today to apologize for the acts of their ancesters from 2000 years ago.

He did not say Jews killed Jesus, or that we should punish them for it. He said we should NOT hold Jews today responsible for the death of Jesus, and we should not hold citizens of Virginia responsible for slavery.

And without responsibility, there can be no apology. Otherwise we'd all be apologizing for Saddam's torture chambers, since we all certainly are "sorry" he killed his people.

I would never tell someone to "get over" slavery. I would tell them not to expect an apology from me, or my state, for something that wasn't done but me, and wasn't done to them.

I would tell them their lives would be better if they stopped living in the past and instead looked to how to make their future better. But it is there choice whether to take that advice. If Hargrove had said "blacks should stop looking to the past, and instead focus on how they can make the future better", that would have been a stronger statement than "get over it".

Unfortunately, Hargrove is quite old, and unlikely to word things eloquently. Old people sometimes simply blurt out whatever is on their minds.

Saying Jews killed Jesus, who was himself a Jew, in any context, is perpetuating a stereotype, whether it was intended or not. He's too blunt for his own good. As you say, that happens sometimes with the old folk.
