Del. Frank D. Hargrove Sr., who recently disparaged blacks and Jews with comments about apologizing for slavery, had a great-grandfather who owned a slave.
The Hanover Republican yesterday gained unanimous approval to introduce a resolution in the House commemorating the end of slavery in America. The measure would acknowledge Juneteenth, the nationally recognized commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
A search by librarians at The Times-Dispatch and the Library of Virginia shows that Hargrove's great-grandfather owned a slave. An 1850 slave schedule lists Nathan D. Hargrove, a 22-year-old Henrico County resident, as owning a 60-year-old female slave.

That means that Hargrove's promotion of Juneteenth is hypocritical and he should certainly give his entire estate and sign over his income to the descendants of slaves or to Mrs. Clinton's campaign before pleading publicly for forgiveness. Or he could switch parties and attack gunowners and all will be forgiven and his hateful horrible heritage will be expunged.
Duh ... it's right there in the first sentence.
yeah but Byrd made the decision to wear the sheets. This delegate had no say in what his ancestor did 157 years ago.
It is a sign of how far we have fallen into PC modes that you feel you should even write that.
Maybe these loons have something...
The Democratic party was responsible for fighting to preserve slavery, and then later for fighting against civil rights.
Therefore, every modern Democrat inherits that legacy and must pay reparations.
(This is sarcasm)
This kind of crap just continues here in Virginia. I am sick of this "poor blacks" nonsense. I would be embarrased by it if I were black.
America, apparently, was the only place on earth that ever had slaves, in all of history. It started with us and is all our fault. Only black people have ever been slaves. No white person was ever a slave. Only white people ever owned slaves. No black person ever owned a slave. Only white people ever took or sold people into slavery. No black person would ever do that...........
He was a 22-year-old who owned a 60-year-old slave... most likely he was "set up" for success by his parents.
The witch hunt is on. Newsrooms have been bitten in recent years by the "diversity" bug with organized groups of "African-American journalists", "Gay journalists," "Hispanic journalists," etc. This is no joke as Bernie Goldberg has pointed out in his writing.
These highly politicized groups are pushing a more radical agenda at local newspapers everywhere with officially sanctioned "diversity" policies that include quotas or their equivalent on who to feature in stories. We need more females, African-Americans, Hispanics in our stories.
And of course we don't want to show too many mugshots of minorities in crime stories, either.
This witch hunt of the descendents of slave owners seems right in line with such an agenda.
Our Sunday newspaper did something like this by publishing a story about the family whose descendents helped the Confederates during the Civil War. A little girl passed a note in a bouquet of flowers to the Confederate army that occupied my town during the Civil War. The note described the positions of the Union soldiers defending a key bridge. The bridge got burned just in time to keep the Southerners from heading towards the state capital (Harrisburg).
Diversity wants to reignite old conflicts and politicize them so new laws can be passed to make government more powerful and people less free. Reparations anyone.
Are you aware of what he actually said? ...be careful not to take the word of such a media outlet regarding the nature of his words. I actually agree with the comments he made about today's blacks not being slaves and the condition having ended 140 years ago. I did not think he dispareged anyone except people who are absoultely politically motivated in seeking to use race as a divisor in todays political environment...and that's why they are outraged about it. He is attacking one of today's liberal's bedrock institutions, much as Alan Keyes, a black man himself, has done for years.
A good read in this regard, regardless of how else one may feel about Keyes, is his book, "Mastering the Dream", which is an excellent expose on how the left particularly uses race to pander votes and economically subjugate people to the welfare state, convincing them they are owed something and therefore ensnaring them in govermental dependancy.
I don't believe the man intended to disparage Jews, it was something along the lines of that "ham sandwich" thing, or Byrd's infamous "white n*****s" remark - trying to come across as accepting, but fumbling badly and ending up perpetuating a stereotype. As far as ancestors having a slave, I seriously doubt that any of us could honestly claim to have none. Bondage was an accepted part of existence for the vast majority of human history ... doesn't make it right, but doesn't make it go away, either.
Many blacks were slave owners. Interracial marriage wasn't needed.
Some freepers who know about history in the south could point you to that information.
I certainly agree with the sentiment that blacks, and all the easily offended classes, should get over it and move on. I don't see that as being a disparaging remark or sentiment.
If on the other hand, he had made remarks that were, in fact, disparaging then that alone would be enough to question his fitness for public service.
In either case, the fact a distant relative owned a slave is not of any consequence.
Thanks!
I don't think it was even that ... It was a very apt comparison. The people who got upset are the professionally, perpetually aggrieved. He should have told them to pound sand.
Demanding the Commonwealth of Virginia to apologize for slavery IS as ridiculous as demanding Jews to apologize for killing Jesus.
This harassment is not unlike the treatment afforded the sons and grandsons of the Tsarist era Russian aristocracy under the Communist regime. While most of the aristocrats fled Russia or were executed after the Russian Revolution, their relatives who bore surnames associated with the old nobility were often denied employment or access to education. Our homegrown leftists would love to do the same thing with the old Southern elite.

Here is an article about a possible relative of hers:

Detectives had tried to arrest him on assault charge
A Revere man shot himself in the head outside his home yesterday and later died after police tried to arrest him on assault charges, officials said.
Kenneth Meola, 57, shot himself while sitting in a pickup truck parked across the street from his home on Mountain Avenue, according to the Suffolk district attorney's office.

It may or may be a relative, but, heck, let's don't pass up an opportunity to use a sound byte. He COULD be a cousin or even a 6th or 7th cousin. They may even share great-great-great grandparents.
