They stayed home to protest Bush, and because of that their main promoters like Santorum and Allen lost.

Exactly! Now they are not happy with the choices. I was a longtime Allen supporter from OK, and we all know what happened to him. They also voted 3rd party in some instances which also helped take out Republicans and now have a hard time finding a candidate? If they are staying home in 2008 to teach another lesson because the candidate is not conservative enough, then we need to be reaching out to new groups of voters for 2008. I will vote for McCain if he is the nominee and for anyone on here that knows me, knows that is going to be hard to do, but I will vote for him in lieu of ANY Democrat. Notice the Dems that were touted as being conservative -- sure cannot tell it by most of their votes.

See my post no. 16. I'm totally on the fence. Considering how the selection this year may get even more compacted than normal, each one of these presidential candidates need every Iowa Republican they can get.

Eight years ago the Straw Poll in Aug took out some of the candidates. If I remember correctly, Alexander dropped out the next day and Quayle and Dole may also have been casualties. Hatch was there but I don't remember when he dropped out.

By the time Iowa Republicans get done with the caucuses (or is it caucaii, as Rush calls it?), there won't be many left.

McCain seems to be slipping. Thompson has a great group working for him in Iowa. He may move up. If I can get reassurances Tancredo will remain faithful to the Republican nominee, I will consider him. He has the issues.

Newt had better get going if he's going to do it.

On Nov 7th 2006, George W. Bush was POTUS and the leader of the Republican party, NOT Rick Santorum, George Allen or anyone else for that matter. For six years Pres Bush, along with his loyal subordinates in the Congress --- Hastert, Frist, Boehner and the rest ---- set the policy agenda for the federal government. Bush was chiefly responsible for shifting the Republican Party away from the ideas of limited government and fiscal conservatism towards more liberal spending policies, expansion of the federal bureaucracy, enlarging the welfare state and promoting liberal immigration reform and amnesty.

Some conservatives spoke out loudly in the last election cycle. On election day some conservatives stuck with the GOP candidates available, while others decided to stay home and punish Republicans for ignoring their conservative base. You and others need to listen up. Instead of pointing fingers at conservatives for the GOP losing, how about placing the blame squarely where it belongs. That would be with Bush&Company. If you don't want to see the same results in 2008 that we saw in 2006, I suggest you refrain from mindlessly attacking conservatives. That will lead to only one result. A Democrat in the WH come Januray 2009!

I agree . I don't think the *purists* are reliable. No one is good enough for them but candidates who could never win. I think it is wise for us to start to appeal to other voters rather than trying to placate those who are unlikely to support us anyway - no matter who the nominee is.

You are so right and I am still pissed off about that. FREEPERS were yelling to the Heavens after the election that democrats were not going to pass anything because conservative democrats were elected.....what idiots they were in thinking that....I am talking a huge percentage of FREEPERS that were doing this. I was actually stunned and knew that it would not turn out like their naive thoughts.
