Nickelodeon pimping che guevara Reader Rob D. sent me the following email:

First off I'd like to say great job with the blog, I've been reading it for some time now and I visit it reapetedly throughout the day. That being said, I'm a 32 year old American-born Cuban. I'm married and have 2 little girls, one who's almost 4 and the other almost 2. We watch a ton of children's programing and I could swear that tonight I saw the absolute lowest of the low. Nickelodion has been promoting a new show called the Naked Brothers Band about 2 little kids who start a band. these guys can't be older thann 12 or 13. I could swear that one of them in the comercial is wearing a Che shirt with a Cuban flag on it! Plase post and ask if anyone else has seen this. I am 99% sure I saw it but it was a quick clip and I was so shocked I almost came out of my seat. I feel like there must be something we can do about this. I was very impressed with the speed in which the word got out there about the Target stores and the quickness of the results. Anyway, hope you can post about this and thanks alot for your time. To be honest, I was skeptical. But unfortunately, Nickelodeon's "Naked Brothers Band" kids show is, indeed, pimping the Butcher of la Cabaña:

When my kids find a show they like, I buy it on DVD, that way they can watch it whenever they want, and I don't have to deal with all the other self-promotion crap.

Right now they are on a High School Musical kick LOL. Thank Heavens they can shut their door, because if I have to hear that movie or its soundtrack one more time, I may go insane.

Amen! Nick is obsessed with bodily functions and left wing indoctrination.

My point was not to inform you of something you already knew but to point out that there is a substantial connotative difference between the Che image and the others. The juxtaposition implies an equivalence that does not exist in reality. Napoleonic and piracy images are not commonly used to advocate either Napoleonism or piracy these days. The Che image is commonly used to promote the causes for which this mass-murdering thug committed his crimes. This is true regardless of the intent, though the Nick producers are obviously aware of it.

Describing this as "creepy" is putting it lightly.

My first clue that something was wrong with this show was reading that the name of the kids' band is "The Naked Brothers."

It can still be fake. The kids on the left and right look like they were added in.

That does mean the Che shirt is probably real, which is another reason to throw the TV in the trash.

Where are the parents of that undressed little boy?

This is infuriating.

why does a six year old kid have to have tatoos and pose bear chested with a gangsta man?

BLOCK NICK!!

I don't think so. Maybe they're owned by the same company that runs a really awful network. And maybe, once a every two months, some political or social BS gets propagated in a mild form on a special of some sort. The channel is on quite a bit at our house, and if the show you describe was aired, it was a rare thing.

Depriving children of Sponge Bob because every once in a while the channel airs something objectionable is a bit extreme. Overall the channel is very creative much easier for a parent to stomach than its competitors like Cartoon Network. Sponge Bob is sometimes hilarious, and rarely annoying. Fairly Odd Parents is easy for both kids and parents to watch. Some complain about vague references to sexual themes, but vague is the key word here; way over the heads of 6 year olds and harmless to their little minds They used to have a show called “Hey Arnold” that was excellent, and “Rocket Power” always made me wish I had grown up on the California coast. The shows aimed at older kids can be inane, but rarely push any social or political buttons.

I'm not pleased that they have a show called "Naked Brothers Band". Didn't one person there stop and think: "Hmm, maybe a kids channel should leave suggestive words out of a show title"? On the whole though, if you really look at Nick as something that needs to be banned in your house, you should conider getting rid of cable all together, give away all your possessions, going up on a hill, and waitint for the rapture.

Che is much more than that......

He was a sadistic, brutal murderer who was "Castro's enforcer" and was directly responsible for thousands of deaths of Cuban men, women and children....

Many Cuban-Americans have direct relatives that were killed by or through Che'

The anarchist link came much later as the socialist and communists adopted him as their poster child.....

Che' was the personification of evil....

A DVR or Tivo can help filter out bad stuff as a previous poster suggested. My problem with Nick is twofold.
1) If I could selectively block titles on a channel I would. Unfortunately you either block the channel or you block by ratings. Blocking by ratings wont work.
2) Nick has many shows, not just the one discussed in this thread, that are overly suggestive. As for Nick Teen which comes on early the shows have girls bouncing around in suggestive clothing, grind dancing, and promote vanity and materialism. Not to mention the blatant portrayal of parents as inept, bungling idiots in many of their shows.

One other problem. There is no way to block advertisement of shows one might find offensive. You are forced to see the worst (or best) parts of shows that you would never let you kids watch. Cant control this at all without TIVO or DVR.

While I think there are several programs that are entertaining and relatively harmless on Nick, I don't believe you could call blocking Nick "Depriving" to my children. Any time my kids are not sitting in front of a TV is good. Fortunately for me my kids spend most of their free time outdoors playing.

I cannot agree more. Che was a horrible person. I recently saw a two hour bio of him on the history channel. It was depressing because the author of a book on Che seemed to have a soft spot for him and said that most of the people he had executed at the beginning of the Castro regime probably deserved it.

As you said, Che was a sadistic, brutal murderer responsible for thousands of deaths. The loony liberals of today who see him as a role model have no idea what he was really like.

My elder daughter (17) was learning the dance moves off the DVD last night. I'm with you: after the first 40 times or so, you'd think they'd get sick of it, too!

A lot of parents are with you on that. The soundtrack is all the kids ever want to hear in the car. It is, however, very well done as made-for-tv stuff goes, and I'd like to have a chunk of the change it's generating.
