"How much longer? I hear someone," says the nervous terrorist with a heavy Middle Eastern accent, just before U.S. agents storm a warehouse where a nuclear device is being assembled. Confusion reigns, drama builds, the device is detonated and a mushroom cloud looms over Los Angeles. Such is primetime television in the age of terrorism, or as some critics charge, has "24" gone too far?
"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."
Sut Jhally, co-producer and co-director of the film "Hijacking Catastrophe," says the dramatic action in the show creates a dangerous climate in which the public loses some of its perspective on what's real and what's not. Of course that may be a minority opinion given the show's enormous popularity.

I FELL ASLEEP....what happened to the mother and kid? The dad too for that matter.
Well... What about "Jericho?" Seriously... What about it???
I was monitoring DUmmieland earlier today and spotted 3 long threads complaining about the 24 premier. And I wasn't even looking for them. There are minorities at DU that like the show or think it's unimportant, but most of them HATE it. Amusing.
The mother and kid survived. The father was about 10 feet away from the nuke when it went BOOM.
I know this is a stupid question, but do you think that Curtis really died? Maybe they took him to the hospital and he'll be in a coma for a while.. God I hope so. I can't help but be pissed at Jack for that...I guarantee you Asssad is gonna get his, probably by Fayed. Whad'all think? Don't forget that the whole season on "Dallas" where Bobby was dead was all Pam's dream because they wanted to bring him back. Oh, and BTW, isn't that Ahmed guy the same kid in a previous season who was the son of a terrorist whose parent killed his girlfriend Debbie?
Someone set them up the bomb. You have no chance to survive make your time.See post #9.
Try 3,246 on the official thread.
That's nothing. I predict by the season end of 24, it will be the largest thread ever.
Nope, this time the roles were reversed. Last season they had an Americanized teenage son of foreign Islamists, this time around the parents are loyal but the kid is a home-grown fanatic. Given the 7/7 bombings in the UK and the home-grown terrorists arrested in Canada, the latter scenario is far more believable IMO.
bttt lol
We only have the kid's word that the father is innocent this time. A kid doesn't usually have the wherewithal to hide a package inside a sheetrocked wall inside the house without the parents knowing.
Before this season's premier, I thought the same thing, but my thinking has changed. Prior to this season's premier, I watched the show twice, and I concluded it was way too PC. I decided to give it one more chance this past weekend. Glad I did. The terrorists are cruel, evil Muslims, and the left-wingers are generally portrayed as inane and weak. Yes, there are left-wing characters to despise and curse at, but that's part of the fun. Suggest you give it another try.
Somebody tell this clown that it's not the associations that are dangerous, it's pretending that there is NO Association that is dangerous!
but the left seemed to be ok when nukes went off in The Day After
Absolutely correct.
True, but I don't think his father is a significant character. But then with this show you never know- two seasons from now he'll probably be back to avenge his son's death ;-)
Oh but that was to show what would happen if Reagan kept provoking the Russians!
Who knows... we may never see him again, or he may be one of the guys overheard in the detention facility.
