It turns out that this story in Haaretz has been discredited. See posts 43 and 54.

It will be interesting to see if the back story behind the Haaretz article comes out.

"2. No military forces, armaments, weapons systems, or military infrastructure will be introduced into the demilitarized zones. Only a limited civil police presence will be deployed in the areas."

In other words...Hezbollah will move in unopposed.

It makes no sense for Israel to give up the Golan under any circumstances.
___________________________________________________________

You don't understand. You see; this time, since Israel is compromising, if the Syrian's attack then it's because Israel is the aggressor just like all the other times Israel compromised with the Muslims.

So now it all make sense, right?

I'm not sure whether to add an /S

Yes, even the Syrians agree it's BS.

Wonder who wanted to float a story like this and what they thought it would accomplish?

The link is useless. No such story. And the link on the main page there to a story that the original story (wherever it went) has been denied is also not a working link.

U.S. officials: Cheney was kept in the loop on Israel-Syria talks
By Akiva Eldar, Haaretz Correspondent
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/814534.html

Says that a former Israeli official met a Syrian representative, and that two former senior Central Intelligence Agency officials were also there, and that the meetings were arranged by Geoffrey Aronson, of the Washington-based Foundation for Middle East Peace. The story also reiterates the Syrian position that the non-negotiable starting line for talks will be Israel's unilateral move to withdraw from the Golan.

There is nothing new about any of this, and the "negotiations" were by a cell of traitors with no authority. It was a propaganda exercise, as is the republication of the events.

Ah! Here are some live links.

"...Many view it as a necessity, but the majority still view it as being soemething oocccupied for military ends rather than a natural part of the nation..."

The current value of the Golan Heights is as an Observation Platform. It also denies the same to Syria.

'High-Ground' is always valued in any potential Battle situation. ......... FRegards

High ground is important but modern long range observational tools negate it majorly, although Israel still has an advantage in it.

The real value of the Golan though is the water which is crucial for Israel if large areas are to remain economically viable and habitable. Water is still Israel's achilles heel which is why they've always been very blunt about it.

from your first live link:

However a government spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the contacts, confirmed that officials were aware of the talks, though they were not sanctioned by the government.

Sounds like Haaretz taking a leaf out of the AP book of 'journalism'.
