I have the same kinds of questions, especially how does the abductor convince the children not to run away as soon as they can, or to call out to passersby, struggle in the car or being into the house, tell someone, and so on.
The local paper talked about how Shawn Hornbeck called Devlin at work on Friday afternoon, so were both boys left alone in the apartment? It seems Devlin was gone at times all day or night, so how did he control them?
I hope the authorities are able to learn much more about these situations and use the info to educate the public, kids and parents.
When the cops first went into the Devlin apt. and saw another juvenile there, one of them remarked about how this kid could have been Shawn Hornbeck but probably wasn't - kind of in passing, not really meaning it.... Then the kid spoke up and said, "I AM Shawn Hornbeck."
No doubt THAT'S when the cops were totally flabbergasted.

I recently gave my young students a major first-thing-in-the-morning lecture that adults do NOT ask for directions or help from children -- NEVER approach them if they do -- instead, make noise, run, find adult you know, etc. -- it was quite a long speech (there was a local problem related to this, which is what inspired it) with specific examples. They told me I really scared them. And I'm really glad!
Could anyone who watched the first presser give me an idea of how long it went on for? I'd like to record it for my husband, who will be out for a while today. TY

Well, it's just that Ben was/is an exceptionally bright young boy. It was reported he is a straight A student and had even taken his SAT's.
I want to know what powerful method Devlin used to subdue and restrain Ben as he was making his get-a-way, all things considered.
I know...we'll find out in due time :)

I was so proud of my ten-year-old niece who was riding her bike when a man in a car slowed down and asked her something. She didn't stop to find out what it was, but rather took off on her bicycle as fast as she could and the guy pulled away. In light of this story it makes me weak thinking about what might've happened had she stopped to talk to him. I commended her for her quick thinking, and believe that it's important for the adults in a child's life to help them set good boundaries between them and strangers, and even people they know, if they have any reason to doubt their actions or motives.
I am just trying to catch up from overnight, so I may be behind for a little while longer. Could you please ping me when you find that information?

These are special kids. Hornbeck, especially, will need support and counseling for YEARS to ever have hope of returning to normalcy.
Devlin deserves to be locked up for life, for sure. If he's murdered other little boys in the past, I pray the MO will figure that out and give him the gurney!
I love that idea! There does need to be some sort of way that kidnapping charges could be added to the molestation charges.
I remember that story; it was so sad when he had his life together that he had a motorcycle accident and died.
It happened so fast it almost sounds like there was two of them doing the abduction (to me) .... you know, stop grab and hit the gas... you just cannot let your kids out of your sight for a minute these days.

I would love to hear that, too, but part of me thinks it would be fodder for any would-be kidnappers on how to do it successfully.

hey ohioan, check post 804. That has the Shawn hornbeck foundation information. I plan to call the foundation number later to see if that is where we can send donations for him and not just the foundation.

I want to give to the Hormbeck boy since he will need a lot more to recover from his nightmare. Counseling, tutoring to catch him up in 4 years of missed education, clothing, etc.......

We should eventually know the details so we can try and educate our kids. But sometimes, things just happen too fast to think straight..
