Explosions Rocks U.S. Embassy in Athens

Associated Press

Friday, January 12, 2007

ATHENS, Greece - Police cordoned off streets around the U.S. Embassy in Athens early Friday after an explosion inside the embassy compound.

Authorities searched nearby apartment buildings and a hospital amid reports that an explosive device may have been fired at the building. The blast smashed glass in the front of the building, near the U.S. emblem of the embassy.

"I heard a loud bang I didn't realize what was going on," said Giorgos Yiannoulis, who runs a kiosk near the embassy.

A grenade thrown thru a window, lands in a toilet. No injuries and minor damage.

Leave it to FNC to go with another mindless ALERT

Ah yes. Reminds me of an Iranian I met at college just after the fall of the Shah. He was a Communist, and couldn't wait to get back to Iran. His "friends" had helped the Mullahs toss the Shah, but he wanted to go home so that he could take part in the REAL revolution which would throw out those Mullahs. No doubt if he went home he's long dead. Guess the Left never learns.

Ah yes, may I remind you that this is decades after the Shah fell and most of the young people in Iran are very pro American.

If you watched any of World Cup last year you saw a huge contingent of young people waving the Iranian flag with the Shah's emblem in the center.

A young Iranian begged my son to exchange his AMERICAN flag for an Iranian flag (without the Shah's emblem) After much pleading from the young man, my son gave him the American flag.

we have communist terror groups here too and the American groups are far more effective (elf, alf etc.)

Those groups have more printing presses than members and they were finance by the USSR.

Having been there it is hardly back water, if anything they have seriously embraced the international world. In fact many places are now indistinguishable from any mall style street. They have their Nine West, Bannana Republic, American Style Shopping malls, TGIF (literally), Applebees, Bennegans, and not to mention the club life.

It just happens to be that which our historic places have the spot where benjamin franklin walked two hundred years ago and studied the greeks did 5000 years ago, the greeks have the actual place of 5000 years ago.

You obviously know nothing of Greece other than your ignrant comments and how much the nation has moved beyond the agrarian ecconomy. In fact Greece is the only ecconomy that has been booming because of its free market moves.

No way will this involve genuine Greeks. The Greeks are good people. This has to be some muzzie miscreant.

This is a good point.

America's leaders, most of them, are telegraphing to the world that we have no principle except bread and circus. Take what you want, kill what you want, just make sure we get back in time for Entertainment Tonight.

Such a culture will be viciously attacked.

Such a culture will die.

Greek news outlet reporting the authorities are speculating the rocket was fired from a moving vehicle.

Keep in mind folks there are cameras all over the Area of the Greek embasy.

There is also an American Consolate in Thesaloniki in northern Greece whic also has cameras all over outside.

I would hate to think what the backblast of a rocket would do to a car's interior.

Just waiting for the left-wing liberal idiots to say "we deserved it" or something asinine along those lines.

The Democrats deserve it for making us look to the world like a paper tiger.

Wow - where did you pick up on something like that? I can't believe people would actually bet on this kind of thing.... well, then again, after visiting Vegas and seeing a lot of slot-machine zombies (those are the hard-core ones still sitting there at 6am after a long night), I guess I can.

In all honesty, Padre, this news is almost in the category of "Move along; nothing to see here."

Greece has had its share of anarchists, with a few brief interludes, since the early 1900s. These groups are very small and are motivated by a sort of anti-capitalist desire for, well, anarchy. On occasion they focus on US interests with the usual excuse that we are hegemons, bloody capitalists, anti-Greek, supporters of dictators, etc. Usually their targets are banks; indeed yesterday they firebombed 3 banks in Athens. Its simply what they do. These characters, I'm telling you, are right out of the Black Hand and Sacco and Vanzetti except that they almost never injure, let alone kill anyone (though in the past they have indeed killed people, Americans, British and Greeks.

There is also something in the Greek mentality which drives them to "give the finger" to authority figures, especially their own. On Tuesdays in Athens, if the weather is any good, the students from the university often riot...for no particular reason except its Tuesday and they want to give a collective "Nah!" (that's a bad thing in Greece)to whatever government is running things at the time.

My experience with Athens is limited to sitting on a plane on the tarmac.

My final tour in Europe, we had a chapel tour planned to trace Paul's route in Greece. That's exactly when Kosovo went down, so our commander canceled it based on a State Department memo regarding danger in Greece. (Something to do with Macedonia at the time, IIRC.)

So, I still long to go there.

Did find a Mt Athos website once that's awesome.

which is why I want to see the security pictures first.

reports saying the impacted window was right next to the ambassador's office.

Now the big discussion is the theory to stop today's scheduled bilateral talks.
