Bush adding 21,500 troops to Iraq force - LIVE thread- speech 9pm EST

Unswayed by anti-war passions, President Bush will send 21,500 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and build the American presence there toward its highest level to quell worsening bloodshed. The move puts Bush on a collision course with the new Democratic Congress and runs counter to advice from some senior generals.

Set to announce his decisions in a prime-time speech Wednesday night, Bush was to acknowledge making major mistakes in Iraq, primarily failing to deploy enough U.S. soldiers and demand more Iraqi troops and cooperation to confront the country's near-anarchy.

In advance of Bush's address, White House counselor Dan Bartlett said U.S. military operations have been "handcuffed by political interference by Iraqi leadership" — but now will proceed under rules allowing troops to confront Shiite militias as well as Sunni insurgents.

(snip)

The new Democratic leaders of Congress met with Bush and complained afterward that their opposition to a buildup had been ignored. "This is the third time we are going down this path. Two times this has not worked," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Why are they doing this now? That question remains."

Senate and House Democrats are arranging votes urging the president not to send more troops. While lacking the force of law, the measures would compel Republicans to go on record as either bucking the president or supporting an escalation.

I was thinking the very same thing. If they wanted to put in an austerity program and reduce federal spending and conserve petroleum resources and stop the GWarming word, they could just limit their own damn junkets and air travel.

Thanks.

I've got to call his office tomorrow and tell the staff how much I disagree with that Neville Chamberlain response.

I never listen to polls. Never.

To me, they're the same as the mainstream media.

Agree 100%. Also some in our side of the media have to be blamed for what happen. Republican voters do not usually listen or believe the liberal media but they usually listen to our side of the media and believe. When some of our most famous talk show hosts and political commentators constantly beat up on the President and the Republican Party in the last 2 years, then yes it will demoralize many of the GOP voters.

Which particular Iraqi are you talking about?

I was speaking of the future fantasy Iraqi who is currently unwilling to fight for his freedom and incapable of creating a viable govermnet but is willing to to have these things delivered as a present paid for with American blood.

Which particular South Korean are you talking about?

The ruling Uri Party springs to mind which supports unconditional aid to North Korea, whose leader has supported North Korea's right to obtain nuclear weapons and who blames the United States for North Korea's antics.

Please keep him in your prayers.

Done. Prayers for his safety and for the safe return of all our wonderful military over there. We owe them so much.

conserve petroleum resources and stop the GWarming word

It occurred to me the other day that the sinister Dems probably have secretly invested in oil companies.

After all, they are doing all they can to raise the cost of oil....If they "conserve" oil (limit oil production), they raise the cost of oil. Global cooling would raise the price of oil, too, because more heat would be needed in the winter.

Thanks for the ping. Had to work till 11PM. No matter what the POTUS decides to do, there are clowns that will piss and moan.
How long had a lot of demorats and their associate commies in the L/MSM made it sound like Rummy did not want enough troops to be deployed. They hissed and booed that we did not have enough troops. Now the assholes are screaming for no additional troops to be added to help distinguish the Baggy Dad circus. Just who is shitting who?

From what I just heard on CNN..and what I have read, I think what the MSM will use as something from Pres. Bush's speech to be very critical of is the part about making sure that Syria and Iran don't interfere.

I just saw Robert Reich on CNN..and he said that Pres. Bush doesn't have the competence to take on Syria and Iran..but he pretty much taunted them in his speech...

Soooooo..now they are gonna say he is being a "cowboy" with Syria and Iran...LOL

I listened to it on the radio and I thought he did very well. Not only that, the evening commentators were swayed by what his speech. They said that this is no longer a partisan issue and that we are fighting terrorists for the long haul. Very interesting.

Thanks. I see where you're coming from. It's much nicer to have people be grateful for what we (and the UN, in the case of Korea) have done.

No matter what he said, or what he does .. they will call him ... something. The door was slammed, and their brains were closed before he spoke the first word. Phooey on them! Dirtbin is hearing from me.

Thanks again.

85% of the American population might be too busy trying to get by in life. They're not "dumb". They just don't have the time to follow geopolitical events like FReepers do.

But if The President was on their TV screen explaining it to them every week, then the poll numbers wouldn't be what they are.
