City's murder rate is 30 percent higher than any other U.S. city
NEW ORLEANS - In the last week more Americans have died in New Orleans than in Iraq. Since Dec. 29, there have been eight military deaths. In the Big Easy, there have been 14 murders.
Among the latest victims: Helen Hill, a 36-year-old mother shot in her home in front of her husband and 2-year-old.
"She was just such a wonderful person," says friend Sheri Branch, "the brightest spot of New Orleans to me." The killers are growing more brazen, striking in broad daylight and using assault rifles, even with police just 30 yards away. And witnesses refuse to talk.
"We have a culture, a certain population in this city with an intent on committing violent crime," says Assistant Superintendent of Police Steven Nicholas. "They feel no repercussion, they have no fear of police."
New Orleans' murder rate is 30 percent higher than any other city in the country.

Has MSNBC declared it a Civil War, yet?
If Bush cared, he'd land there, not just fly over.
the killing of two people who were SNIPING, trying to kill repair crews isn't going to have an effect, as anything other than an excuse for CRIMINALS to commit more Crimes.
The "CULTURE" as Ass. Super. Nicholas cares to call the scum and rabble is the problem.
The "CULTURE" that needs to be running the streets at Three in the morning.
I lived in New Orleans and the surrounding region for 22 years, got long out before Katrina was even a gleam in the Gulfs eye, so I know all about as I've heard it called "Baghdad on the Bayou". In my opinion thats an insult to Baghdad
the only "landing" I want to see in New Orleans are the Marines.
Hopefully the Saints will be crushed in the Divisional Playoffs next week. I hold that wretched city responsible for much of the anti GOP and anti-conservative vibe that is going around. A pox on them and their football team!
Up for debate ... much of the anti-GOP slide came from the GOP itself. Big fat and happy ..
NOLA needs another enema
The Marines, absolutely. But with 'shoot to kill' orders.
Yes- it's that bad.
Look- New Orleans has been decaying for a long time , in many ways.
The Marigny, where this latest killing happened, has been dangerous for 40 years. I grew up in that neighborhood-Rampart and Elysian Fields. By the 70's it was 'watch your back' 24/7. My brother got married at St. Cecilia's church, very near where this couple lived, in the 80's. Not a neighborhood you felt safe in even then. Anyone who says the Marigny has never had crime problems till now is lying. I remember a huge war, between rival black gangs, on Elysian Fields and Urquhart in the late 70's! Found a man shot on my steps in the 80's!
There will be MORE killings like this as long as the prey goes to the predators.
The 'gentrification' of the Marigny brings in well-heeled gays, yuppie professional types, the artsy crowd, and Kumbaya liberals like this couple. They 'love the architechture' and the 'ambience'.
They ROMANTICIZE DECAY.
They think it's 'edgy' and eclectic to live in 'diverse' neighborhoods. The drunks and druggies and thugs are 'colorful urban characters' they want to enlighten and help.
And so the wide-eyed, sympathetic, naive bunnies get taken
by the tigers- every time.
The criminal mentality is generations old in N.O. Saying a cheery 'good morning', or handing out free medicine, isn't going to make criminals all warm and fuzzy. It marks you as a trusting future victim.
Buying a house in a decayed area doesn't make you a pioneer or missionary, it makes you stupid and dead. But still they move in, and are then surprised when the thugs surrounding them attack.
The ambience changed for this couple pretty quickly, didn't it?
