WASHINGTON Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.
As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

Poor Betty. Where do they go next. Michigan? She must be exhausted, emotionally and physically.

For All the Saints
Text: William W. How, 1823-1897
Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958
Tune: SINE NOMINE, Meter: 10 10 10 with Alleluias
1. For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
2. Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
thou Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
thou in the darkness drear, their one true light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
3. O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,
fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
and win with them the victor's crown of gold.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
4. O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
5. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
6. From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Some one explain the Phantom of the Opera music to me!
To: Mo1
Hate to say it. That organ music at the end sounds like haunted house music.

The press is our Number One Enemy. Knowing this is what Free Republic is about.
And, should Brokaw pass before I do, I will not speak at his funeral. They are free to Wellstone it.
To: Right_in_Virginia
I was just wondering; it seems to be a fantasia on a theme, but I do not recognize it. I'm sure the whole program will be printed in tomorrow's papers.
To: teddyballgame
- yes. although it was claimed Clinton was praying. Sure looked sound asleep to me.
To: JFC
After Clinton lost his election in Arkansas, he joined the church choir (so he could be seen on TV) as he worked to be elected again. It succeeded...for him,not us.

That has to be the longest walk that Betty Ford makes back through the cathedral after the ceremony. Glad to see the President holding on to her one arm.

Indeed it does!
Husband just called to say he is bringing sandwiches home, and I had to confess I haven't done one thing this morning except watch TV. Thanks to all who participated in this thread about an historic moment. And thanks to God for the life of Gerald R. Ford.
