Foot-in-mouth disease and gaffes on the campaign trail are nothing new when it comes to politicians caught on tape. Thanks to a year largely defined by user-generated content, some of 2006's best political flubs stayed in the spotlight, giving the public at large the opportunity to see and hear the country's elected officials in their own words.

"Common good?" Either Billy-Jeff's vicious little doormat person is unaware of Blake's thoughts on general/common good or is Freudian-slipping all over the place, accidentally revealing the truth.

William Blake, “He who would do good to another must do it in Minute Particulars. General Good is the plea of the scoundrel, hypocrite, and flatterer.”

And maddeningly never uttered by a Republican while being interviewed by the DBM.
"Tim/Katie/Bob/George/Chrissy, I call them socialists because of their policies. They want a single payer healthcare system. That's socialism. They want to mandate wage rates and the amount of vacation workers receive. That's socialism. They want to redistribute wealth following the blueprint of Senator Hillary Clinton who told a group in San Francisco, 'We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.' That's socialism. Undeniable socialism. That, Tim/Katie/Bob/George/Chrissy, is why I call them socialists."
Sigh. It's nice to dream.

Whittington was sprayed with bullets across his neck, face and chest

You'd think Cheney was hunting quail with a Thompson submachine gun. Although in fairness, the writer does switch to "birdshot" in the next sentence...after misstating it to get in one more dig at the Vice President.

The only good thing about MacacaGate is that we are spared George Allen injecting his stupidity into the Presidential race.

Number one on my list would be Dennis Hastert coming to the aid of Democrats in the William Jefferson case.

All he had to do was stand back and let the Democrats choke on their "culture of corruption" attack, but no, Hastert snatched defeat from victory by protecting a Dem crook and claiming that Congress was above the law.

It's hard to be wrong on every point of an issue, but Dennis managed to do just that.

Political Blunders of the Year

My personal choice: The American electorate saw some pimples in
the Republican Party...and voted to put the children back in charge.

I made that mistake when I voted for Bill Clinton, ONCE.
With the Internet and Fox News, people that voted for the Dems
or didn't vote, affirmatively decided to put the party of Open-Borders
and Endless Amnesty into power.

By defending Jefferson and his office, Hastert clearly gave the public
the impression that he was making sure the offices of Republicans couldn't
be entered under a valid subpoena.
The average Joe/Josephine surely wondered "What is it the Republicans
don't want to be seen in their offices?".

To the average American, Hastert sounded like Boss Tweed when it came
to the Jefferson affair.

Yep, biggest blunder of the year was those who believed that average Republican supporters would continue walking behind blindly as Republican leaders marched off the proverbial cliff." Very true. Republicans missed a lot of opportunities in the last six years. Spending was out of control, oversight was lax, nothing was done about the borders and the base was poked in the eye many times. The party was arrogant enough to believe that they could continue to win not by pointing to a stellar record but to pointing to the Dems and saying that "the other guys are worse." Are they worse?

I would add some more to that, but that is pretty much the jist of it. Thats what precisely Rove and the leadership thought - they would just try to point to the democrats and say "the other guys are worse". What a bad, bad, strategy.

I get disgused when I think of the way, these
Republicans blew it????????? Including Hastert' who
was a pain in the tuba' with apathy as his sidekidk..
Mad..Yes, mad as hell to have to endure the next
few years with these people in charge ...I hope Bush
has the guts to fight them..he's the only hope at
this stage of the future for Republicans....JK

Look at Murtha's, Durbin's, Kennedy's , Kerry's statements plus the entire Leftist Blog group ala Kost who used hate statements about W, the Pubs, our military, comparing our soldiers with Nazis, Pol Pot et al. Unfortunately, the stupid voter did not see or hear or take those horrible statements into factoring in their votes for those who said the tripe~!

I just remember that Rush Limbaugh open admitted to his audience, sometime in early summer, that Rove was counting on this strategy, and I got the feeling that Rush thought it was bad at the time. Grade for Rove: F-

I always thought Rove was completely overrated and was proved right in this last election. Many of us on FR would make better strategists and it wouldn't be hard if the GOP only fought back rather than the 'new tone'.

Well, I give Rove and team credit for a period of good victories from 200-2004. In 2004, their strategy of registering new voters and turning out the vote was great. However, their late campaigning put them behind way early, and the same happened in 2006. Also, in 2004 the Swift Vets (and later Dan Rathers lies) gave the campaign a much needed jump start.

I think John Edwards' announcement yesterday is a pretty good blunder.
