Foot-in-mouth disease and gaffes on the campaign trail are nothing new when it comes to politicians caught on tape. Thanks to a year largely defined by user-generated content, some of 2006's best political flubs stayed in the spotlight, giving the public at large the opportunity to see and hear the country's elected officials in their own words.

You'd think Cheney was hunting quail with a Thompson submachine gun. Although in fairness, the writer does switch to "birdshot" in the next sentence...after misstating it to get in one more dig at the Vice President.
The only good thing about MacacaGate is that we are spared George Allen injecting his stupidity into the Presidential race.

I would say it was the Dubai Ports Deal.
By defending Jefferson and his office, Hastert clearly gave the public
the impression that he was making sure the offices of Republicans couldn't
be entered under a valid subpoena.
The average Joe/Josephine surely wondered "What is it the Republicans
don't want to be seen in their offices?".
To the average American, Hastert sounded like Boss Tweed when it came
to the Jefferson affair.
I would add some more to that, but that is pretty much the jist of it. Thats what precisely Rove and the leadership thought - they would just try to point to the democrats and say "the other guys are worse". What a bad, bad, strategy.

Look at Murtha's, Durbin's, Kennedy's , Kerry's statements plus the entire Leftist Blog group ala Kost who used hate statements about W, the Pubs, our military, comparing our soldiers with Nazis, Pol Pot et al. Unfortunately, the stupid voter did not see or hear or take those horrible statements into factoring in their votes for those who said the tripe~!
All so true....back in '94; Newt..et al; gave the American People, something to vote for...

I just remember that Rush Limbaugh open admitted to his audience, sometime in early summer, that Rove was counting on this strategy, and I got the feeling that Rush thought it was bad at the time. Grade for Rove: F-
I always thought Rove was completely overrated and was proved right in this last election. Many of us on FR would make better strategists and it wouldn't be hard if the GOP only fought back rather than the 'new tone'.
Well, I give Rove and team credit for a period of good victories from 200-2004. In 2004, their strategy of registering new voters and turning out the vote was great. However, their late campaigning put them behind way early, and the same happened in 2006. Also, in 2004 the Swift Vets (and later Dan Rathers lies) gave the campaign a much needed jump start.
I think John Edwards' announcement yesterday is a pretty good blunder.
