I have a campaign against calling widows "single moms." I started this campaign when a very dear friend who lost her husband when she was pregnant with her second child called herself a 'single mom' as she was being treated very badly by the principal of her kids' school, and I have been sensitive to this issue ever since. "Widow" means that the children do not have a father around for weekends, holidays, etc. It also means that the mother did not have the child alone.
