Former Virginia Gov. James Gilmore added his name to the list of GOP White House hopefuls this week, saying the field lacks a real conservative capable of winning...
He brings to seven the number of Republicans who have said they will run or will consider running.
Heretofore the field has been dominated by three moderates: Arizona Sen. John McCain, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and outgoing Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
McCain and Giuliani have topped most polls. Both bested all top Democrats in a recent Rasmussen poll. Giuliani had the best favorability rating 71% vs. McCains 59%.
Neither McCain nor Giuliani excites GOP conservatives, who also question Romneys conversion on abortion and gay rights...
Probably 95%-plus of conservative decision makers, the key people in the Republican nominating process, dont know Gilmore, said Richard Viguerie
Brownback is counting on social conservatives. He won his seat in 1996 vowing to reduce, reform and return reduce the size of government, reform Congress and return to traditional values. Limited-government conservatives say he hasnt done much to reduce or reform. Hes a lot like Bush, said GOP pollster Michael McKenna. He sees a problem and his first inclination is to toss money at it.
Calif. Rep. Duncan Hunter, who headed the House Armed Services Committee, is a defense hawk who has differed with Bush over trade and immigration.
Winning the White House from the House of Representatives is considered a political impossibility. Few congressmen can claim a base big enough to do it

I will be honest, I had a nightmare I had to vote for the latter two of the three last night. I can't believe I actually dreamed about it, I've not really been thinking about it or anything. It was random. BTW - I woke up sick this morning. I suspect it's telltale why.
I suspect this will be a reoccuring nightmare for many people.
Until I know a little more about Gilmore, I have to say Duncan Hunter is the best of the declared candidates so far; Mitt Romney the best among those who have a decent chance of winning.
Gilmore's pretty conservative across the board, including illegals. He just doesn't froth at the mouth. Lacking a WOW factor? You bet.
TC
Brownback is also so pro-Mexico that if you hit him with a stick, little toys fall out of him.
Message to the GOP from this right winger: So far, it's none of the above!
Put some down-to-earth strong conservative minded candidates out there. Get 'em out there NOW.
Right now if I had to pick one person for President it would be Rick Santorum. If he doesn't run, he better get his ass up to NYS and run for office here. Uh.. please.
Republicans started committing slow suicide when they failed to carry out the promises in the Contract With America.
The fact that McCain, Guiliani, and Romney are the best the GOP can come up with only indicates that the final wrist-slitting is underway.
Were it too happen again, we'll have the nightmare scenario of McCain and Guiliani having the most money out there and the most free coverage on the MSM and all the recognition. It'll be a lesser-of-two-evils primary season.
That would bode well for Hillary.
Neither McCain nor Giuliani excites GOP conservatives...
Au contraire. (kindly excuse the French)
Julie-Annie gets me VERY excited.
Frothing at the mouth, jumping up and down, head spinning on my neck, excited - in that a gun-grabbing, pro homo, pro abortion LIBERAL DEMOCRAT who has the morals of a feral cat would even be allowed to call himself a Republican, let alone be considered as a GOP POTUS nominee.
That sob should be shunned and ostracized. And told in no uncertain terms to go back where he belongs -- the RAT party, from whence he came.
(no offense meant to Feral Cats)
He did.
He's not my ideal, but when you consider the alternative...
I think Duncan Hunter may not have the pretty boy factor, like Mitt Romney, but I really like the Army Ranger, presidential way about him. It's going to be important for the people to look at the candidate and think that is the person you could rely on for your safety. And Hunter is great and witty with what he says. He just cuts right to the issue. After all the complaining about how the GOP sits back and allows themselves to be attacked, Hunter calls the media/Demonrats out on it and that's what I really like about him.
If he can do that, I think he's earned at least second spot on a ticket. Even if he goes on to win the nomination, I think he's smart enough to pick a solid conservative for geographic as well as idealogical balance. Papa Bush was not a great president, but he did a solid job as VP to Reagan.
What I've seen of Duncan Hunter, I really like. He'd solid but doesn't foam at the mouth like Tom Tancredo. I just wonder whether he'll get any traction as a congressman.
Sorry for the typo.
There is an opening for a conservative candidate in the primaries, but it needs to be someone who can rally the troops - by which I mean, most of the Republican Party and the independents. However, Reagan is dead.
As to the 'alternative issue'. I don't prostitute my self, or my vote, so the scare tactic won't work. Ergo I will not vote for a person with whom I disagree with on every issue.
In addition, this nonsensical idea that "Only Rudy Can Save Us", is scary and dangerous. It's Cult Of Personality Worship, period. And the last politician who used that gambit, successfully I might add, was Adolph Hitler.
And I'll be damned if I voluntarily disarm for that s.o.b. and march around saying "Hail Rudy".
Your logic worked pretty well in '06, the demonRATS agree that you should only vote for a purist.
We don't expect conservatives to "prostitute" themselves but if an honest evaluation of the real options is beyond your capability, good luck in your misery, only why make us suffer with you?
No chance. Giuliani is the only one who can win the general election. But Republican conservatives evidently believe that losing is a virtue so they will nonominate a certain loser. And we better get used to "President Clinton" once again. Just ridiculous.
I'm sick and damned tired of the conservative "base" determining the future of this party. When do we grow up and smell the dog crap? We're just giving the presidency away in 2008.
After they crossed the equator, the captain surfaced and the guards went up on deck first with their guns for sharks and then the whole crew went swimming.
They carried out every promise in the contract.
Are you lying or just stupid?
Only? Romney's sole electibility ding is his LDS religion, which will fade as a concern as people become more familiar with the man. Giuliani has a host of negatives (starting with multiple divorces) that will only mount as the Dems/MSM ceaselessly harp
