CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A Marine Corps squad leader was charged Thursday with 13 murder counts stemming from the killings of 24 civilians in the Iraqi town of Haditha last year, his attorney said.
Staff Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich was charged with 12 counts of murdering individuals and one count of murdering six people by ordering Marines under his charge to "shoot first and ask questions later" when they entered a house, according to charging sheets released by defense attorney Neal Puckett.
As many as eight Marines could be charged in the case, the biggest U.S. criminal case to emerge from the war in Iraq in terms of people killed.
The deaths occurred on Nov. 19, 2005.
Lawyers for two Marines already have said they expect their clients will be charged and its believed up to six others could join them.

The post from flightline with the Turley statement was a godsend. By pushing Turley to talk, and pushing producers to book him, let's hope something happens!
You know, my post above was pretty stupid. These threads can be found via Google searches. Let's keep it discreet.
Eight Marines were charged one year ago today.
Four have been cleared. Two will be court martialed. Two await word of their fate.
Directly and indirectly, we've helped raised tens of thousands of dollars for the defense funds.
We've made Free Republic and DefendOurMarines.com rallying points for the Marines and their families.
We've spread the truth about Haditha despite overwhelming odds.
Not bad at all.
Thanks to everyone for their work and support. A year from now, when all of the eight are free, we'll have reason to look back on this with tremendous pride. We stood up and we made a difference.
Merry Christmas to all!
Merry Christmas RR - thanks for all your efforts. And may God bless each and every one of these warriors and their families
A Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Merry Christmas, RedRover and to all!
This Christmas, the Haditha Marines and all our troops, will be in our thoughts and prayers.
My proudest moment *ever* on FReerepublic, was knowing that we were some comfort for these brave warriors and their families.
I’ll meet you right here, next year - to celebrate the day when all Haditha Marines are free.
God Bless.
Merry Merry Christmas to you too!
I think it is wonderful that the families are able to be heard on FR. Glad I found you!
Merry Christmas!!!
Thank you for all your efforts in assisting our brave Marines in their time of need.
A very Merry Christmas to you and yours.
God Bless and keep our Marines at this special time of year and always.
Merry Christmas Red! Hopefully by this time next year life will be better for the Haditha Marines and their families! It’s hard to believe sometimes that it has been a year since the charges were filed, although it’s been a very, very long one. There has been some good news, some not-so-good news, and no news at all for some of us. We pray that in 2008 things will be better and all of the news will be good so that our lives can somehow get back to normal. I DON’T KNOW HOW WE WOULD HAVE EVER MADE IT THIS FAR WITHOUT THE PRAYERS, LOVE, SUPPORT AND DONATIONS OF EVERYONE AT FR! You are so wonderful! I am so glad I found you!!
Merry Christmas.
And merry Christmas to you Red. We salute all you and a some others at this site have done in behalf of these Marines.
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Red and thanks much for your hard work and dedication to this cause.
You lead the way, Red.
May the light of Freedom always shine, for you and our Marines.
Knowing you, I know that light even now shines brighter.
Merry Christmas, my dear friend.
Red, thank you for all you do for our brave warriors, and for keeping us informed! You keep us inspired to continue the fight and do such an amazing job at rallying the “troops” at Free Republic and DefendOurMarines!
Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas!
Let 2008 be the year the nightmare ends for ALL the Haditha Marines!
Oh, and if I may be Grinchy for just a moment, may John Murtha and Tim McGirk find giant lumps of coal in their Christmas stockings!
>> we’ll have reason to look back on this with tremendous pride.
The attention you and others provide for the welfare of the Marines is inspiring and representative of the justice, liberty, and freedom we strive for.
>> Merry Christmas to all!
Merry Christmas to you too Red!
“Just curious, but do those people ever, ever defend any American soldiers or Marines?”
If you’re referring to the JAG, they both prosecute and defend. Hopefully with the same professional vigor.
