Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes
BENTON, La. The parents of a month-old girl whose toes were gnawed off while they slept apparently disagree about whether the culprit was their ferret or their 6-week-old pit bull.
Mary Hansche, 22, told KTBS-TV on Tuesday that she thinks it was the ferret. "The way the bite marks were on her foot. The ferret being out of its cage. I knew it wasn't the dog," she said.

"We were told that the puppy had blood on its fur. But when the officers arrived there, the animal did not have blood on its mouth," he said.
Natale said which animal did it won't affect charges against the Hansches, who were booked Dec. 10 on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond each.

Their daughter has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.
The Hansches were asleep on a mattress on the floor and the baby in a carrier next to the mattress when her cries woke them, police have said. They were not tested for alcohol or drugs, since such tests would not be needed to prove the charges, Natale said Wednesday.
Defense attorney Pam Smart said she is waiting for results of a hair analysis to back up the couple's statement that they were not using drugs.

She also said their bonds are too high for misdemeanors. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled next month.
Both pets were released from quarantine but will remain in the Bossier City animal shelter until the court case is over, Natale said. Either the court or the city may decide their fate, he said.

Might as well save your fingers, the rabid "Pit Bull" haters here are beyond reasoning with.
I responded to their insane fury by rescuing a young male Bull Terrier* for myself.
I've had them before, and Bull-Dozer is possibly the smartest dog I have ever seen or owned.
He's my constant companion, and so friendly my biggest worry is that some idiot will try to steal him.
*He's never seen a fighting pit, so "Pit Bull" hardly fits.
If I were your neighbor and my "Pitt" disappeared after you make a statement like that, and you should expect some really unhappy results in return!
"Pitt's" are no worse than any other dog breed, I suppose you also want to kill the one who saved it's owner, a woman, from being beaten to death by her estranged husband recently?
Oh right, THAT story did not make the papers, only NEGATIVE stories about Pitt's can be published.
You rabid haters disgust me, I think I'll go play with Bull-Dozer for a while, he is clearly more intelligent than you!
You really need to trim your generalities.
I currently own a "Pitt Bull", so might be insulted by your broad statement if I were sensitive about the opinions of people who speak from ignorance.
And Bull-Dozer is so damn smart it's spooky, he will fetch his ball or rope on command, and clearly knows the difference.
He ask to go out when necessary, and has different behavior for really Needing to go out and just wanting out to play.
He's so friendly that people keep trying to get me to let them have him, or sell him. Children to little old ladies, they all want a dog like Bull-Dozer.
The difference of course is that I treat him like a pet dog, not some sort of Macho status symbol, don't put chemicals in his food, and let him meet everybody that comes in the door.
You have to make a Pitt mean, it's NOT natural to them.
Enough of this, I have to take Bull-Dozer out for play, and feed the horses.
LOL!
My attorney has a "Pitt" as his constant companion, in his office!
It greets his clients, and is the best behaved dog I have ever met.
So when our German Shepherd killed a mutt that was trying to attack my mother many years ago it should have been killed?
The same dog later pulled my little brother out of traffic when he ran into it after a ball, probably saving his life.
That particular German Shepherd was a great dog, later poisoned by insane neighbors when it was the German Shepherds that bore the brunt of MSM attacks.
One of our local residents was recently saved from being beaten to death by her estranged husband, by her "Pit Bull", should that dog be killed too?
You "Pitt" haters are irrational.
I would like to see more case studies such as this
They also discuss some of the other factors
Sheesh, they both look like they "already been told twice"!
What drug gives them that Zombie look?
Of the 28 dogs (not all pits as I understand it) responsible for a fatal attack between 2000 and 2001, 26 were males and two were females. Of the 26 males, 21 were sexually intact; he reproductive status of the remaining five male dogs could not be determined.
Spay and neuter your pets. A good point.
Louisiana Revised Statute 14:93.2.1, says"Child desertion is the intentional or criminally negligent exposure of a child under the age of 10 years, by a person who has the care, custody, or control of the child, to a hazard or danger against which the child cannot reasonably be expected to protect himself, or the desertion or abandonment of such child, knowing or having reason to believe that the child could be exposed to such hazard or danger."
If convicted, the parents face only a fine of up to $500 and up to six months in prison

Shaking my head here. The child is maimed for life and thats all they get.
No you didn't!
Uh Huh, that's not what I got from several of your post, particularly the "any dog that bites ONCE should be put down" non-sense.
You clearly appear to have a zero tolerance preference, I prefer a more inclusive look at the facts.
Dogs cannot speak, they have no hands, they are forced to communicate the best they can.
If some twerp is causing them pain they have a right to end that pain, and if little Timmy is yanking on the dogs ear little Timmy should expect to get a nip.
I have had a wide variety of animals as pets, many exotics, including Hawks, Ocelot, Black Tip South African Lioness, de-scented Skunk, very large Iguana, Raccoon, Porcupine, and one Ferret.
The Ferret was the only one I ever found necessary to release back to the wild, it could not be tamed, and was the only one to ever bite me.
Bull-Dozer is my third Pitt, I have never met a "Bad" Pitt that did not belong to a BAD owner.
The current anti-Pitt frenzy is just the latest media driven garbage, I saw the same thing with Doby's when I had them, German Shepherds had their turn, Rottweilers get second place as devil dogs in the media these days, Dalmatians have also had some bad press in recent years.
I expect the Canario's or some other very large "New" breed to eventually replace the Pitt's as evil incarnate once the media and reactionary fools have driven Pitt ownership underground and off the front page.
Fortunately I live in rural Nevada, where the anti-Pitt mania is pretty well non-existant. We still judge dogs and men by their actions, not media portrayals.
I wonder how many of these anti-Pitt post would be deleted if "Black's", "African American" or "The 'N' Word" were being used in place of "Pitt Bull"?
Try it as a mental exercise, you will see the thread would be a short one.
Please use paragraphs, pandora...you look more rational that way (I mean that kindly).
If you don't know how to paragraph, please let me know.
And those of you who pull these freak exceptions out of your hat to try to make an illogical point are pathetic.
You can make a case for justifying ANY ACTION on the planet this way. It is absurd.
Owning any animal is a huge responsibility, and we all agree that too many people are not worthy of dog ownership, and use the big dangerous ones as a status, macho symbol to make a point. You can never undo the damage done to another human being by a pit bull, or a rotweiler, or any other large dangerous animal. Knowing how they are bred and their biology makes everyone accountable. The dogs are innocent. The owners are stupid and immature and far from naive. They are the ones who should be punished, AFTER their dogs end up paying the price with their lives and at the expense of injury or worse to other people.
Canario's will be the next one. And I still don't hate pits so don't lump me there. Right now I don't have time to argue with you . If you love animals and rescue them then I would like you and you have my respect. Just don't say I hate pits because I don't, I just love dobermans better. Since I have a small child I now breed shih tzus and I hear bad things about them. My husband is laughing here at me as he is a big lover of pits and plans to get one once our daughter is older and we have more land. {You clearly appear to have a zero tolerance preference}, you think?? note the tagline.lol I think it maybe that once you work for a shelter you get hardened to things the person in charge etc won't let you try or change. Anyway I have my ideas and you have yours, if I can learn something from you thats great. A very Merry Christmas to you, your family and your Bull-Dozer ~~Pandora~~
I will try Paulat. But I get going and I am not all that rational I guess. I do know how to and after this I will try to remember. Have a very Merry Christmas Paulet.~~Pandora~~
